Leaked iPhone Activation Process Memo
posted by arn on Saturday June 28, 2008 04:11 PM

iPhoneinCanada.ca posts a memo that reportedly describes some of the iPhone 3G activation process for Rogers stores in Canada. Specifically, they point to an "activation only" version of iTunes which is being offered as a beta download from Apple.com:
To ensure customers can leave with a fully functional iPhone, it must be first be "unbricked". This process involves using the tether (a USB cable: see below) to connect/sync the iPhone to a unique 'Activation Only' version of iTunes via a computer. More information about the unbricking process will be provided in training (found on Fast Track and Sales Central) and you will be informed when the job aid is available.

Come July 11th, the full version of iTunes 7.7 will be publicly available which will also contain this "activation only" mode. Little other new information is provided. Most of that appears as if it will appear in a later training memo.

i'm assuming if it's true. The US activation will be the same

I dont get that. it says iTunes 7.7 will be used for "activation only", and it will be available to the public on july 11th. Does that mean we can activate at home?

Based on read info, it seems certain, that leaving an AT&T store with an non-activated iPhone 3G is NOT going to happen.

However, the process at the Apple stores has be shrouded in a bit more of mystery. Whereas, some literature has said, that if for any reason iPhone 3G can't be activated at Apple store, these activations will have to be completed though tunes at home!?

Go figure!?

this is confusing the **** outta me. Why cant apple be a normal company and release all the details, but no they have to be secret again

Yeah, I feel the same way.

Hmm.... I actually don't get it. haha. So we activate at home or in store?
I hear some say you have to leave the store with an activated iPhone, & now there's a new iTunes version? :S
Haha if activate at home..... go figure on what will happen. XD

if i'm not mistaken, the leaked itunes version is for apple and at&t workers only

Yea, that is what I took from the memo. ATT and Apple will have this program running on their computers and unbrick the iPhones for customers.

Someone must not have proofread the "memo" before it was sent out.

sorry guys, now the word is it's a false memo

Its not a false memo. I downloaded the iTunes Beta 4 version yesterday morning and installed it. When I ran it with the command line switch and plugged in my iPhone, I got a message telling me it was already activated.

I can see this mainly being helpful for 1st generation (non-AT&T) iPhone users who upgrade to the 2.0 firmware. But an unlock solution will also be needed before it can really be useful.

It is not a rumor. ATT employees will have a modified version of itunes on their computers so that they can unbrick the iphones. If you think the lines where bad last year just wait till the 11th... they will be CRAZY!!! even if only 1/2 the amount of people get one compared to last year, the activation process will take forever. Well about 3 to 5 minutes longer then last year for ringout. So, lets say about 1 hour extra for every ten people in line.

So from what this means... MAYBE if we buy from an AT&T store, we can activate it from home? Whats for them to worry if its bricked?

Unless they have every single employee there and use every single Mac they have on display only for activations that day, I dont see how they can do it.

1) What's the worry? It'd be exactly the same as buying a first gen if they didn't do in-store activation; one could just sell off the phone and they never get the required data plans and such from it. They'll likely get one to an open computer (the DSL demo computers or MobileBroadband demos, perhaps?) and work through activation before they can leave.
2) If they have the activation-only setup on every computer they have at the store: I'm sure a good majority of the reps will be there to process iPhone buyers and leave at least a couple reps for other customers (or have them take shifts between iPhone sales and other services...); it's possible.
Apple stores won't be an issue either, since every Mac will be updated to iTunes 7.7 at the time of launch (or have the beta version installed if the phone releases before 7.7 comes out) and the salesperson there will just get you to a computer (or do it themselves) to activate before leaving with the phone.

It makes sense that AT&T reps can get commission for activating first gens now, since iTunes activation-only mode should have setups for first gen model as well as the 3G model. Now it'll be unlikely to even get a first gen (if they get them refurbished, returned, or such) out of the store w/out activation...

And I'm just wondering, can anybody with this beta (from the memo) and the beta from the SDK tell if they are somehow similar?

Doh, i meant from an Apple store, not from an AT&T store...

god, its so much work to get an iphone..
itunes required, line at the door required, stupid csr required
