I am trying to decide what size iPhone ?

Do we know what the average size of an APP will be? That might help me make up my mind!

The apps will be Tiny compared to the total size of the iPhones. Unless you go absolutely crazy your apps will never get close to 10% of your total memory.

Your memory will be filled up with your music, photos and videos, not your apps.

+1 That being said, the 16Gb is probably a good idea if you plan on keeping all of those on the device (I am currently attempting this with 8, and it just isn't enough)

I've been debating whether or not I'm going to sync my entire photo collection with my new iPhone. Part of me wonders what the hell the point would be, but another part of me says "why not?" So far, the only objection I can come up with is I'd be constantly worried about some creep making off with my iPhone and being able to basically view the last seven years of my life.

Anyway, OP, I can't tell you what you should do, but I'm going for the 16GB. You never need the extra storage space until you do, and when it happens you'll be much happier you've got the 16 than the 8. IMO.

It all depends on what kind of apps you are talking about. I can see some games with more advanced graphics and resources taking up 50MB+ each. The Sega guys said deving for the iPhone was more like working on a console than a cell phone which I take it to mean the size of the game will more likely be inline what you'd see on a console game as well (older console like N64 not PS3 etc.) . The Sega project manager even commented they were surprised the iPhone could handle what it could so they had to bring in an artist to scale up the artwork, higher res art and bigger textures means bigger game files. Other things like Tom Tom, if they do end up making an iPhone gps app, will easily guzzle down a GB or two. If you are unsure it might be best to wait and see what the apps on the App Store look like as far as size goes. I am going 16GB because I currently have an 8GB and while it is OK now for me it won't be much longer so I might as well go for more.

.

The iPhone/iTunes copies over smaller photo re-sizes that are purpose made for the iPhone Photo app. They are still zoom-able to get some more detail but the trade-off is worth it as you can fit many more photos w/o wasting space. I have about 3200 photos which take up 2.1GB on the phone. In their original form they take up over 7GB. The theft issue is another story though.

so you're going to base your decision on a very slight chance some dirtbag will steal your iphone and see all your pics?
either don't sync any pictures or don't buy an iphone. you will never enjoy using the iphone if you're living in fear of something like that happening. every time you take out and use the phone will you worry that someone will just swipe it and run off with it?
here's a tip...lock the phone.

Way to paint me as a paranoid loon. It's not a crippling, game-stopping fear; it's just something I've been thinking about, is all.

Jerry -- thanks for the tip about the photos. You really think a GPS app would take a gig of space? I assume you mean for on-board map storage. But why not just implement a system like TeleNav, with network-hosted maps, like most other phones do? I'd imagine we see that before we see GB-gobbling GPS apps for iPhone.

TomTom already claims to have one of these.

i think the problem comes when you get do a dead spot with no phone signals. No way to download the current map...i believe those handheld GPS have approx 2GB worth of maps and POI. If the phone has the hard drive space, why not?

I always go with the larger model as a safety cushion.

As a friend of mine always says "Gotta get the Zilla!", so I'll be getting the 16gb.

Depending on how quickly you go through phones, I'd go with the 16gb. If you're like me, and plan to stick with your 3G for awhile, the 16gb would be a good investment. As your music, movies, and photos collection grow, you'll be glad you aren't running out of room with an 8gb.

My way of thinking is to always get the most you can afford to get. I hate running out of room...

I would go for the 16GB too, if you can afford it. Go and see how big your music library is. If it's more than 16GB, then it doesn't matter much since the 16GB is the biggest. If you only have 4GB of music and want to carry around a movie or two, the 8GB may be fine. I wouldn't be surprised though is Apple comes out with a 32GB version around Christmas. I believe they offered at 16GB around Christmas of last year.

Well think of it this way, even the 8GB iPhone has more storage built in than 99.9% of all phones sold and devs know this. Having locally stored maps for GPS make it far more autonomous in case of a bad/no network situations. For GPS use locally stored maps is a major selling point and with the ample storage an iPhone offers the GPS makers are likely to take advantage of it.

Wish I could have gone with a bigger size. 4gb could have been filled a long time ago. I'd suggest seeing how big you collection is and doubling it.

i went and spoke to an att rep yesterday as i had questions concerning the gps. he told me that the maps would be onboard and gps would work outside of the service area. i made sure he understood me as i travel a lot through rural areas, and he reassured me that it was onboard. now if he was right or not is another question all together...

I don't think an Apple rep let alone an AT&T rep would have a clue about any potentially new 3rd party software going on the iPhone. While I think his conclusions are valid there is no information out there and I don't think AT&T has the whole launch day sorted out at this point, they aren't even thinking software at this point and the App Store has very little to do with AT&T if anything.

Agreed.

While I also agree with the practical benefits of hosting maps on the device as opposed to on the network side, I gotta say that I use TeleNav on my Mogul pretty much every day, and sometimes I'll find myself in areas with no cell coverage. Lemme tell ya, this thing must download a good portion of the projected route right at the start of the trip, because TeleNav's maps don't miss a beat when I go out of network coverage.

I guess I just can't see a lot of people jumping to download an app that's going to gobble up between 1/8 to 1/4 of their brand-new iPhone's memory right off the bat, that's all.

ive seen alot people talking this way about the gps on the iphone. who is to say that this feature is 3rd party? it says right on apple.com that the gps for the iphone will offer turn by turn directions and live gps tracking. why go touting the abilities of the gps and then leave it to 3rd party to hope they get it right? granted, they had no clue about many things and they were very willing to admit that, but on this, he seemed very adamant about.
