If you're with VoiceStream take it to a VoiceStream store (not a sub dealer) and they should be able to flash an upgrade. I'd advise calling before you go to see if they have the latest flash files for your phone. In the alternative you can send it to a Nokia service center and they will do it. There shouldn't be any charge for doing it other than shipping. You cannot update the firmware yourself.

6190 v6.73 25-01-01 (jan 25, 2001) NSB-3

don't know if it is the latest but it is the newest fido vancouver downtown has as of march 07, 2002.

have no clue what is added. unfortunately, unlike v6.71 for the 5190, there is no T9 predictive text input added to the 6190 firmware. strange because both firmware versions have the same date. maybe it is a hardware issue.

Posted by: Yukiko

Oh, may I ask a "dumber" question?
What's a "firmware" actually?
And how I can check what version I got from my Nokia phone?
Thanks in advance!

Posted by: SVWComm

Here's the reference to check what's version is your phone.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...&threadid=13577

And about firmware question you should do a search in Howard forum, I think it has been answer before.

the new 3390 firmware is 7.13

Posted by: Xxi JuStiN ixX

hmm, is the 3390 firmware the same as the 3390 gold, because i have the 3390 gold and my firmware is 2.01 signed 28 August 01. is my firmware just really old, or is the 3390 gold revision numbers different from the plain 3390.

Posted by: obsidianic

that's why it's a good idea to also provide the date when listing a firmware version.

Posted by: Matrix

I have 2.01 signed 28 August 01 firmware as well in my 3390b gold can someone tell me if this is old or just a different number than the regular 3390

Posted by: obsidianic

something i just noticed:

i bought a fido 6190 from some dude in ontario. when i upgraded the firmware recently in vancouver, it must have added two chinese languages. i've seen older 6190 firmwares in vancouver that had chinese too so i guess it must be a vancouver thing.

my 5190 (vancouver bought) did not have chinese originally and does not have it now with the latest firmware ... still only english and french.

US phones have english, french, and spanish?

I just got my phone today, in Toronto too. It's fully unlocked, according to the codes provided in the FAQ. I also have the above firmware number with that date. So I guess this is the latest version for this phone?

Posted by: Darla

Hey. I have a 3390 gold and my firmware version is v 02.01. I called the Voicestream store where I purchased my phone and aksed them if they could do a flash upgrade for me and they had no idea what I was talking about. What does the newer version do anyway?

Posted by: FrOsTi3v0

Posted by: ams

Just went to get my Fido Nokia 3390 flashed,

more info about
6190 v6.73 25-01-01 (jan 25, 2001) NSB-3

this is info specific to fido in vancouver. don't know about other areas in canada or in the US.

6.73A has the following languages: english, french, spanish
6.73B has the following languages: english, french, 2x chinese

sorry, don't know if there are any other differences between A and B.

It may sound stupid to ask, but I am new to fido... when do you get your phone flashed??

Posted by: Eluder

Whenever you like, if there's a new version of the software, you can get it flashed. If you're in the Toronto area, the Fido Flagship store in Eaton Centre will take care of the flash upgrade no problem!

actually .. there are many LANGUAGE packs available .. but they do not give the option to choose ..

there are 8+ different language packs for world phones like 8890 ..

Posted by: obsidianic

do the letters represent the language pack? this would seem odd to me if they did since the provider can pretty much choose what languages go in the firmware updates, right?

Posted by: YNOTT

Any news on when a firmware update is coming out for 8390 ? Its needed badly !
When it does, Rogers still do it for free dont they ?(did my 8260 for free)

Posted by: lostblur

whats wrong with the current 8390's firm ware?

Posted by: YNOTT

Many people(incl myself) have noticed the phone to be slow, especially when all voice recorder and tags are used. Phone tends to reboot (especially when no signal). Those are the most significant flaws that I have noticed

the letter does represent the language pack .. all providers have access to all packs .. but they can choose which they wanna provide.

for north america, they normally choose A since it has menu languages in english, french and spanish [and often, T9 in the same languages]

i just recently flashed my friend's 8890 with v12.20C .. which was v12.20 with ..
menu languages of:
english, cantonese, mandarin, thai, vietnamese, indonsian, malayasian [i may have 4gotten 1 language]

and T9 in english only

Does any one know where to get an up grade to the 2.06 software version for a Nokia 3360 in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Ventura, San Bernadino or San Diego Counties? I have been calling all the Level three service providers since late January 2002 till June when I gave up. No one has what takes, either the software is on order and it is comming from Finland, or that the got the cables but not the software, or the got the software but not the cables or that the got both but had to be sent back to Finland 'cause the cable is faulty. Help!

is the latest 8390 firmware 7.8 or 8.00 ??

Posted by: FlyBoy104G

I thought I read somewhere on this forum that there will be a new FW available shortly for the 6100 which will allow the assigning of polyphonic ringtones to Caller Groups.

Am I correct in this assumption or did I dream this?

If indeed it is correct does anyone know when the release might actually take place?

Thanks

I would like to propose a form of mailing list to which one could subscribe to be notified of a FW revision.
It could either be manufacturer specific i.e. Nokia or Model specific i.e. 6100.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

How do people learn about a FW revision suddenly being available. Is there any reliable site on the Internet which could be consulted?

Thanks.

Is there a site somewhere (Nokia site?) where the changes in the newer firmware versions are noted, or do you just have to guess what they've fixed? And has anyone ever seen a new problem come about from a new firmware version? (Not that they flashed it incorrectly, but that the firmware programming actually caused a new problem along with solving some.)

I thought v8.0 firmware was available for the 8390...

Posted by: lostblur

latest pack for 3650 is v3.16

Posted by: lostblur

there is a mistake in the current list:
6590 | NSM-9 | v40.44 | 07-Dec-02
6590i | NSM-9 | v40.55 | dd-mmm-yy

6590/6590i is the same phone except some providers who had no egsm coverage at the time used the 6590 with firmware pack lacking the egsm. to further designate between the two 'versions' the egsm capable handset became known as the 6590i.

all packs above 40.xx are egsm capable, so based on that the last pack for the 6590 is 30.36.

also, has anyone actually confirmed the 6590i having a 40.55 ??

some people confuse the NSB-8 as the version number. when in fact its the internal model designation for the 8390 at nokia.

This rev disables Anykey Answer completely. Formerly, Anykey Answer was forced On. Now it's permanently Off. One must use the Talk key to answer all calls. There is no menu to enable/disable Anykey Answer.

The store tech said this rev also clears up some "power issues." ?

Posted by: red_platinum

Guys.. trust me if your phone works LEAVE IT and enjoy it. I had an 8290 and it HATED any upgrade, it freezed and screwed up when flashed it to 5.22 ..
so I downgraded it back to its original 5.07 and it is absolutely perfect..

Well you may have better luck but in my opinion unless you jump from DCT3 to DCT4 it is OK but other than that you may not feel the difference and it will cost you money.. Give it a try anyways and get back to me.. I had bad experience with flash upgrades maybe I was just unlucky..any comments??

the tech at the Cingular store in Waltham, Mass (a company store) said it (v 8.05.3) would fix some of the issues related to automatic time update and the tendency of the 6340i to stay on Cingular Extend, and some other "minor things"...he said he flashed his and thought it was a worthwhile update -

as an aisde - it is a good idea to get the Nokia Suite (free download) and back up your phone book and phone settings on your PC before letting the techs flash your phone -

Hello everyone.

I have just upgraded my 6590i with the latest firmware 40.55.
You recall that I was seeking to retrieve hidden menus when I unlocked my phone.?? The issue whether flashing the phone will do that did not happen. the hidden menus are DEFINITELY a SIM card issue. I have flashed my phone and upgraded to the new firmware 40.55. And I do not feel ANY difference, menus sought are still hidden and I do not really find ANY difference..

So I am sure now that any hiden menus are definitely a SIM card configuration.. I do not even figure a hair thin difference between 40.44 and 40.55 ... Anybody can just tell me something to make me feel I did not waste my money for that upgrade??

I have a newer version on my 3595:

V 8.12

8.12 was installed on the phone I received as a warranty replacement. The previous one had 7.20 installed. This newer software apparently includes built-in support for AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ as a new application with it's own main menu item (shortcut is '12').

Among other minor refinements; ring volume adjustment is now graphical with 5 levels, keypad tone volume adjustment is now graphical with 3 levels, and the WAP browser now features a side-to-side scrollbar at the bottom, appearing when a page exceeds the screen's horizontal limit (there really should be an option to turn this off).

You're in luck, there's actually a Level 3 service center right in LA that can do the job, one of only a few places in the U.S. that can actually do it.

I wrote to Nokia asking them about having my phone's firmware upgraded and what I needed to do to send it to them. I got an email back saying that I needed to take it to my nearest service center. This is the email I got back from Nokia:

Thank you for e-mailing Nokia's Contact Center.

We appreciate your inquiry regarding your Nokia 6610 and Nokia 3650 phones. We understand that you would like to have the firmware upgraded on your phones. We are happy to provide you with the following information.

We recommend that you have your Nokia 6610 and Nokia 3650 phones evaluated at an Authorized Service Center (ASC) to see if there is a firmware upgrade available.

You can search for an ASC in your area by visiting our web site at www.nokia.com/us. Click on the "Support" and then select "Repair" from the list provided on the left hand side of the page. On the subsequent screen, please enter your model number and ZIP code to search for a repair center.

Please call these locations prior to your visit, to verify the necessary equipment for the repair of your phone. Each ASC is independently operated; repairs offered and fees charged may vary among the different locations.

Nokia proudly stands behind its products and provides its phones with a warranty for a period of one year from the date of purchase against manufacturer defects in material and workmanship.

If you have any additional questions, please contact us. To ensure proper handling, please continue to use the current subject line.

Thank you for choosing Nokia for your mobile needs. We appreciate your business.

Thanks for the help.

I have a Nokia 3650 that I bought from someone, so I don't have a receipt and wouldn't be considered under warranty. I was wondering if you've ever sent in a phone like this and still had them successfully do the work for you? I was just noticing on Point 3 of their instructions about sending a proof of purchase and how they "may" not do the work if I don't have a proof of purchase. I do have a legitimate reason for sedingin the 3650, though, because when browsing on it I've had it lock up on me and then reboot...just out of the blue.

Thanks.

Yeah, I might as well try it. It sounds like the worst they would do is just send the phone right back to me and then I'm just out the cost to ship it to them.

Do I have to front them for the return postage, or do they pay the shipping back to me?

Thanks.

PS, I just had Blackfoot update my PRL today; I don't know how it possibly could; but I'm hoping it completely eliminates what remains of the random restart problem...

I just received this phone as a warranty replacement this week. Not sure what the update does, but hopefully it fixes a couple of the known bugs, like the alarm not working correctly in the organizer, and not being able to preview ringtones in Modtones.

That the latest firmware version for the Nokia 3395 is:

V04.02.03 09-04-03

I live in Las Vegas, NV. Is there anyone in the USA that can still update the firmware in the 3395 to the latest version? Thanks for any help!!!

Moderator Note: edited. Please do not ask question about "how to unlock"

Nokia USA Repair can update the firmware for free. You just have to mail the phone to them.

My nokia 3595...

AT&T branded, unlocked and used on Cingular network

v 7.02
28-05-03
NPM - 10
(c) NMP

My phone doesn't have AIM, probably because it's an AT&T phone. If I upgrade to v 8.12, will I have AIM on my phone? Also, if I send the phone in to Nokia, what all do I send? Just the phone? Do they need the SIM in the phone?

I'm not sure if I want to do it or not, but I'd really like to have AIM on the phone.

Thanks!

NO SIM! do not send your sim card to anyone! as for the phone, you could update the f/w but that will not give you IM capabilities on your phone. i dont think that the 3595 can handle it anyway, its a series 30 phone. and i'm pretty sure cingular doesn't offer and IM services, just ATT&T with MMODE. but again im not fully sure. but DO NOT SEND SIM CARD TO ANY PLACE! that i do know.

Cingular's Nokia 3595's have AIM built in.

Check it out yourself:
(I hope this link works)

Cingular phones come with it, but AT&T phones don't. I wish it did.

AT&T has released special "IM" versions of Nokia phones to add these features. My guess is that these phones simply have the latest firmware from Nokia. The 3595 IM and 6200 IM are the current two models.

true, but what about cingular? i heard that the 3300 thru cingular was im ready. menu-14-1 was the shortcut, but i have that exact phone. series 40 version 1 and it doesn't have im. someone explain that one.

Ok, so back to my question...

If I upgrade to the newest firmware for my Nokia 3595, will it have AIM on it?

Can I upgrade it myself somehow? I have a serial data cable on the way, so can I use that to get the newest firmware version on the phone?

Thanks.

call nokia and ask them! i would prefer myself sending them my phone so that if something goes wrong they know what to do...

Nokia CSRs cannot tell what is new in a firmware update, nor do most even have the latest firmware versions at-hand (which is why there are lists on HoFo and my sites).

If your phone is out-of-date, update it. I can't tell you how many people complain about problems with their phones, then when I suggest a firmware update, they say no and keep complaining.

A phone is like a gun, you maintence it for the time when you really need it to work as best as it can, not when it will work without "too much" trouble.

If I want to try to upgrade the software myself with a serial cable, where do I get the download and how do I 'pirate' it? I'm not worried about the warranty. I bought the phone off ebay, and it's unlocked. I doubt it's under warranty.

Thanks!**

Nokia is very generous about warrranty, if the serial number comes back as under warranty they rarely require proof of purchase. I can't tell you where to find the downloads (no, not in PM either), you're on your own for that.

You can't tell me... because you don't know, because of hofo rules, or what?

I emailed nokia about it, so we'll see what they have to say about it, if anything.

Thanks!!!

Primarily HoFo rules, they have banned giving out the URLs to the sites that have the software, due to their free services competing with HoFo's paid advertisement.
