Family Talk: must be primary account holder?

Now that the launch is officially here, I was hoping to find out if people on Family Talk plans were successfully able to get an iPhone 3G.

AppleInsider stated: "Customers who were subscribed to an existing AT&T FamilyTalk plan but were not that primary account holder were told that they would be unable to upgrade to a new iPhone 3G on that plan without the primary account holder being present."

Is this true? The reason I ask is I'm sure there are plenty of people out there like me who are not the primary account holder (the account is not under their name) but is an authorized user (able to make changes to the plan, etc.). Can someone tell us what the deal is? I don't want to make a pointless trip to the Apple store.

as long as your listed on the account as an authorized user, you can do the upgrade. I have talked to 4 different stores and got the same answer from every person.

AT&T store? Or Apple stores?

It shouldn't matter where you go, an authorized user can do an upgrade anywhere.

all att stores. sorry should have mentioned that.

Can anyone confirm if the same is true for Apple stores?

Kid next to me was denied because he wasn't the primary. This was in an Apple store.

I went to my AT&T store and my wife is the primary account holder. I am an authorized user, and was able to purchase without her present...

He may not have been an authorized user though.

So, so far it seems like AT&T stores are the safer bet...

ditto my wife primary I am authorized. They actually only ask for last 4 of social number. This was at an apple store.

that is good to hear!

At the Apple Store I went to, they said only the primary account holder could do the upgrade. If you have the last 4 digits of the account holder's social, they allowed you to purchase. This also happened to those who came in and said they were authorized users (they still required the account holder's SS digits, as well as you (as an authorized user's) digits).

A.k.a. even if you are an authorized user, they weren't allowing an upgrade unless you had the primary owner's SS digits. I saw a handful of kids walk out empty handed (with sad looks of defeat, the line I was in was about 4 hours from start to finish)!

I even called ahead with AT&T to check if authorized users could make the purchase/changes necessary, and they said they didn't see why not, and even made a note on the account. To be safe, I suggest you authorized users (who are not primary account holders) go to AT&T retail stores for your iPhone upgrades.

Well sadly for me it didn't go well at all. I was in line for 5 long hours. This is at the Apple store btw. I am under a family plan. My mom is the primary account holder. However my name is added to the list of authorized users to make changes to the account. When my turn finally came up they turned me down. I was so damn mad. Waiting in line 5 hours for nothing. I don't understand why they gotta make is so damn complicated to get a damn phone. Sigh. I asked to speak to the manager to see if there's anything they can do. I even asked them would it be okay if i called my mom on the phone and have her give them permission. They say that is not allowed. Geez. So for you guys who are on family plans and not the primary account holder I wouldn't waste your time. I will go to an AT&T store today and get one instead. Hopefully they won't require all this stuff. Sigh.

I was inline with a guy yesterday and he was a authorized user on the account and was able to get an iPhone at the Apple store. I don't know if he had the last 4 of the SSN of the account holder though, but Apple did ask me for mine, so I'm sure they asked him also.

If that was the case why couldn't the manager ask me if i can provide them with the primary's account holder SSN? Sigh. Stupid apple. I know my mom's info. I'm extremely pissed. Waited in line 5 hours and going through this is just stupid. I wish they made it a lot easier.
