3G iPhone w/MediaMax 200

I plopped the sim card out of my BlackJack II on which I have a MediaMax 200 data plan and put it into my new 3G iPhone and activated it. The iPhone is running perfectly. I can make and receive calls and access the internet at 3G speeds. The only thing that isn't working is visual voicemail. Instead of the normal iPhone behavior, trying to go to the voicemail tab simply calls the voicemail number in much the same way it works on non-iPhone units. The MediaMax 200 plan is only $19.99/month. I'll gladly do without visual voicemail for the extra $10.01/month it would take to get a real 3G iPhone data plan on that line. Not to mention that the MediaMax 200 plan includes 200 text messages, so its really a savings of $15.01/month over the comparable iPhone plan.

How did you get iphone 3g? did you sign a new agreement?

He probably was sent home when the activation server was in the bathroom doing the *****. You do realize that when you have another data plan visual voice mail wont work because it doesn't have it in the plan. Only the iPhone data plans have it on them.

Edit: NM, I skimmed too fast though your post. VVM isnt 10 bucks. the last data plans where 20(with 200 txts)-30(with 1500 txt's) dollars, now they are just charging a premium simply because the iPhone is newer and I believe that they are charging more since it is using 3G.

I think you really do have the iPhone 3G data plan. Just because you used your existing SIM, that does not mean that you were not converted to the iPhone 3G data plan. It sounds like you might not have not setup your VVM. Try calling your phone number from your iPhone 3G and see if it prompts you to setup your VVM.

As I have said before, it might like before.

So this basically proves it. If any of us first gen owners can find a way to get our hands on a 3G phone, we can pop in our SIM and get 3G data and all that for $20/month.

It doesn't prove anything. Just wait until he still gets the $30/mo data bill.

They arent going to change his bill automatically, especially without telling him.

It will probably work without issue. The same way a media max plan will work with a blackjack (vs the pda plan).

Unless he removes it from the contract, he's still going to get charged for it.

What we don't know is if you're allowed to take it off, and if it will stick. I hope everyone read the T&C of this contract very carefully.

I'm not talking about him specifically. I'm saying that if anyone first gen owner found a way to get an iPhone free of contract (either off ebay or from at&t at the non-contract price), that the phone will work with our data plan- just like all other 3G phones do.

Well of course. But with the prices on eBay, you're better off going and paying the ETF, or waiting until non-contract ones are available.

I am new to the iphone and it's overpriced services. I do know that I can use my iphone 3g sim in my n95-3 and use the internet. So why cant it be reversed to where I use my n95-3 sim to connect to the internet on my 3g iphone? I am pissed that I now have to go from 15/month(n95-3 unlimited internet) and being on my family plan unlimited text to paying $15 more for the internet and $20 more for a seperate text plan. How ghey.

I got no text's sent nor received until 5 hrs later when I called and they told me to use iphone text plan. Damm this phone seems like a scam for AT&T

how did he get the phone though? only way is with a contract.. they probably added the plans for him, and sent him home. he probably thinks they didnt add it since he had to activate it at home..

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, too busy playing with the new phone...

I have 5 lines on my account and 4 of them were upgrade eligible but mine was not. I talked to my business customer service rep (I'm a FAN customer) about how I could get the phone for my line without having to pay the extra $200 as a non-upgrade eligible customer. She told me to buy the phone on any of my eligible lines but activate it for my non-eligible line. Once complete, I am supposed to call in and have them move the $30 iPhone data plan to the number that I actually activated on. Voila. Basically, so long as I extended one of my accounts by signing a two year contract, AT&T doesn't care what line I actually use the phone on. Unfortunately business customer service is only open Monday through Friday, so I need to wait until Monday to call and transfer the data plan. In the meantime, however, I am using my new 3G iPhone on a line that does not have the iPhone data plan (it has MediaMax 200) and everything is working correctly except Visual Voice Mail. To be 100% clear, I have verified my account online and I know exactly what features are present on which line. This is not a mistake on my part.

So, what does this mean to anybody? This indicates that there isn't any sort of technical reason why we can't use the cheaper data plan if somebody is able to get there hands on a device. Perhaps we'll even be able to call back in a few months and downgrade our data plan? I don't know. The intent of the post was only to provide information not necessarily to indicate that I knew a way of cheating the system...

Once they realize they will automatically switch him to an iPhone plan for the extra money. Then if he ever plans on using the BlackJack again he'll be screwed.
