Upgrade old iphone to 2.0, will prepaid att chip work?

I have a 16gb v1 iphone with tmobile. I wanted to upgrade to the new 2.0 software but would want to use a prepaid chip since I know that the tmobile chip won't work...(for now I hope).

I don't really use the phone function on the phone since I have a different provider for that.
I use it as an ipod and for the wifi, mainly.

So can I just get a prepaid chip (already activated) and stick it in my iphone and have it working?
