If your mobile forté is the Web and music, is the iPhone the only real contender? Is it the best for these two things?

as much i dont like like the iPhone, yes. the web broswer on the iPhone is light years ahead of anything on the market. as for music, it has the ipod built in so you cant go wrong.

Yes, I tried for the last year to find a suitable substitute on Verizon or Sprint and it was fruitless (I really didn't want to switch to AT&T). The LG Dare is a mess when trying to browse the web. Even on EV-DO Rev. A, it seems slower than the iPhone's EDGE (not to mention 3G) because the page rendering is so flawed and slow on the LG's browser.

So if you want to browse the web, the iPhone is the only choice for now. However the Google Android phone will use basically the same browser as the iPhone (based on WebKit). So you could wait for that.

When does the Android come out? Will it work well with Macs?

I have also been keeping an eye on Nokia's Tube. Any idea when that comes out?

Simple answer to this. Safari and iPod says it all.

Yes, definitely. It hands down beats any WM device I've ever used.

Android is supposed to be out in the Fall. Google's not releasing a device though, they're releasing a Java-based OS and SDK for device makers to use. Samsung and LG have committed to making Android devices, but, as always with mobile companies in the US, it's hard to say when the actual devices will end up in people's hands. I suspect carriers like Verizon are on board in a vaporware-like fashion, hoping that they can keep customers from switching to the iPhone. Being a customer of VZW for 6 years and having phones locked down every which way, I simply don't believe the supposed new openness of Verizon.

Anyway, I think some existing devices will let you put Android over the base OS. I'm not sure which ones these are, maybe Symbian or Windows Mobile devices? Obviously not the iPhone (though I suppose some cracker will do it).

Google around for more info. The Wikipedia page seems pretty comprehensive. I've only heard bits and pieces here and there. No idea on the Mac compatibility, but it will likely work seamlessly over the air with Google Apps

Yes, nothing compares to the iPhone at this point for web and music.

Android has been delayed until Q408 meaning most devices with it won't appear until Q109. I am not buying into Android at all at this point. Google is having a hard time getting it out the door and developers do not seem happy with it. Part of the delay is due to carrier requests it seems as well which not encouraging.

Partly depends on where you're located, of course.

Many parts of the USA, for example, have no non-roaming ATT coverage.

As for the Safari browser, yep it's still the slickest so far in general. Opera 9.5 on the HTC Diamond is supposed to be nice too, but I've only tried it in beta.

well I just got my iPhone and I have to say that byfar this phone has the best browser out of all my phones and it's a freaking iPod so it's awesome!!!

With google now using our surfing info for nefarious purposes, I'm not so sure I'd want to hand them my mobile history either. Plus, these youtube videos don't exactly impress.

Safari and the iPod portion of the iPhone are by far the best experiences. They both have their limitations, but you have to be a specific user to miss them.
