How much extra will you pay for official unlock?

Right now the cheapest officially unlocked iPhone 3G (8G) should be about $980 (including 2 years of service) from Hong Kong.
I can either get one from there or sign up with AT&T and then cancel after the 30th day, which will be about $500 to $550. But then I will have to rely on 3rd party unlock.
I am still debating if the official unlock is worth extra $400.

Of course we know there will be free 3G unlock in the future, but you have to wait and don't know when it is going to be, and after that you need to be sure the users do not accidentally update via iTunes when the next version comes out.
Plus, right now we don't know how long it is going to take until the new unlock comes out for the 3G version, which probably has a different bootloader?
I don't understand why they still lock it to AT&T when you are required to sign the contract before they are going to sell you one.

what exactly is the "official unlock"

Even if you bought one from hong kong that was "officially" unlocked, wouldn't it still be country locked? That's how the French ones are right?

you should have added a $0 option.
