How to check firmware?

Hi, i know this must sound redundant to you guys, but after reading threads regarding methods to check firmware on my S40, I still have trouble doing so. I tried *#06# and that gave me my IMEI number and when i press down, I returned to the blank screen. (Meaning my software is older than 2.9?) And nothing happens when i press *#ENGINEER*TEST#. Does anyone know how I can check the software on my S40?
FYI, I got my phone from HongKong in March 2001 (when the phone first came out). It was a "water good". So please at least give me an approximation to what my software should be. THX.
Also, I would like to update my firmware. I am in Toronto, where should I bring/send my phone to? Would the people at Simpro be able to help? THX.

To check verion input *#06# then when the serial appers, use the right scroller on the right side and scroll down that should give you the software version, to update firware just call siemens and send it to then and they will update it.
Hope this helps

The engineering menu appears in the settings menu immediately after typing the code.

My phone is from Hong Kong also. My IMEI showed up, when i pressed the right scroll up or down, it brings me back to the main menu? BTW, there was no engineering Menu...

Believe me, the engineering menu *is* there.
If nothing happens after entering *#06# and pressing the side key then of course your software is below 2.9.0.
