Samung Instinct Issues

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: dirtyjeffer

Perhaps to try and avoid too many threads about similar things, why not keep any issues in one thread, for a few reasons. For one, it will be easier for new users to find, as resolutions may come to solve some issues. Secondly, Bell reads these boards and if they can easily see what is wrong with the unit, it may be easier for them to fix any issues. There may even be some situations where someone thinks their unit is not working correctly, but perhaps their unit is fine and there is a setting they can adjust.

How do you put your own videos on the Instinct to watch?

is that something you are supposed to be able to do? (i would assume so, even my Pearl does that)

I would hope so. It is able to hold up to a 8 GB microSD card. I've been trying to figure it out, with no luck. If you're not able to.. well that kinda sucks.

Posted by: MacD

You can. I don't know the exact process however, but I know its compatible with user provided video's.

A quick google search would probably provide the answer.

Other issues I have.. and this is just me, I'm sure there is a way to do it..

How do you record a video longer than 20 seconds? I've looked at the camcorder briefly and it seems as though you can only take 20 second clips.

The option on pictures to upload.. it will show - Upload Destination, then give the options Upload and Add Cool Site. Is there a way to make it so you can upload them via Facebook, for example?

Also.. I notice sometimes I unlock my phone and it will occasionally go into Windows Live Messenger .. now I am not subscribed to that. I hope I don't get charged because my phone goes there.

1. In camcorder mode, there will be 3 buttons along the right side bar of the screen. Hit the second one.

2. Upload will upload it to your Bell online album, and Add Cool Site currently has nothing in it. I don't think you can upload them to facebook at this time.

3. It probably goes into Windows Live Messenger because you're hitting the button (it is on the main screen too so it can easily be pressed, depending on how you hold the phone).

Anyone with Instinct issues/suggestions, with a twitter account, keep reading: You can contact this person on twitter, and it will be sent to the engineering team for review. They're not aware of all the bugs so with the users helping out, hopefully this phone can eventually become better.

1. Convert the original file to .mp4 format using any program you like (I recommend Any Video Converter). Ideal resolution is 432x240
2. Connect your phone to your computer with the USB cable
3. Copy the .mp4 to the MEDIA folder
4. Using the phone, go to Fun --> Video Clips --> My Videos
5. Play. Quality is excellent.

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

Posted by: clewis4u91

Yup I can also say that the quality is excellent. However, the Bell Media Player absolutely SUCKS. While playing a video, if you get a text message it will ask you if you want to continue playing it, I select OK, and it starts from the beginning and I have to fast forward all the way to where I was. Sometimes it screws up while forwarding too (like it will just skip to more than half of the video), and if you try to rewind it will start back near the beginning. Bell, please fix your Media Player!

excellent...one down (well, i figured we would get posts of people with "issues", but they aren't really "issues" at all).

Posted by: holymadness

How to create and upload your own .mp3 ringtones:

1. Pick your song
2. Download any audio editor (I recommend audacity -- it's free)
3. Use your editor to select the portion of the song you wish to use. Limit it to 30 seconds for best results. Save as a separate .mp3 file.
4. Go to http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/
5. Enter your SMS e-mail address (format: xxxyyyyyyy@txt.bell.ca, where x is your area code and y is your phone number)
6. Give the file a description and browse your hard drive to select your 30-second music clip
7. Click upload. Rumkin will send a text message to your phone with a link in it
8. Click the link, the Instinct will download it and place it in its ringtones folder
9. Navigate to Main --> Settings --> Ringtones to select it. Voilą

that might be more of a Vista issue than an Instinct issue.

Posted by: outtamymind85

i too am having issues getting the phone to connect to the computer via pc studio. got the latest version and all the updates but it won't connect. i've got all the drivers and i can see the SD Card but won't let me do anything other then that.

i receive a couple messages ( from the same person) oh at lets say 1 -2 pm for example.

an hour later i go th messaging and it groups the messages as if they were sent yesterday. I'm thinking ok... time must be off. Nope time on the phone is correct. If i open up each message individually it shows the correct date and time...

weird

Does anyone know if the videos embedded in some of the top news stories are accessible with just the unlimited browser feature? Or do I have to subscribe to streaming TV to see them? I've tried to click on a few and while the media player starts up, it just idles at the 'loading...' screen interminably.

Youtube has been very slow to load lately, too (much slower than when I first got the phone). Sits at the same loading screen for a good minute before the LCD goes black. When I turn the device back on, it asks me whether I want to resume the stream and then it finally plays.

Microbrew is another one.

Yeah streaming videos aren't being nice to me. In regards to the videos in the "top news", of course they are accessible for free. You will never be billed for features that you do not subscribe to manually (unlike Telus, where you open up the Radio app and it automatically subscribes you without asking).

Posted by: mercy123

I've watched my phone just automatically turn itself on and try to connect to Windows live... it's kinda creepy - especially since I don't have an account to connect to.

Issues I'm upset about - why did Bell remove the Visual Voicemail capability? Why lock the phone to only access msn products? o(ok corporate partnership but come on... give me another way...) Incoming texts show wrong time received so conversations don't thread properly. No Vibe and Remind feature - if I've missed a call, I'm screwed and have to constantly check the phone.

Not to mention my phone seems to freeze alot - mainly when "waking up" or accessing the contacts screen.

I do mostly love the phone but the lack of customization sucks...

See posts by 'airbag' on page 2 of this thread for instructions on how to install Opera Mini 3.1 high memory and get it working (sort of) with a keyboard workaround.

Apparently there is going to be 2 minor firmware updates in between now and October, and a bigger update coming in October.

Posted by: baxbunny

Do you know when we get the firmware upgrade that sprint got on friday the 15th?
http://www.slashphone.com/major-sam...vailable-151275
cause my bluetooth headphones is playing slowly (like 80% speed or something) and skips when i play music.
The bluetooth headphones work on other phones fine...

Posted by: clewis4u91

The Sprint one and Bell one is completely different. They've had MUCH more time to fix issues with theirs. It's only been a little over a week since Bell got theirs, so I wouldn't expect anything immediately.

So I need some help. I've tried to receive picture messages from a friend. I hit picture in the messaging part and I can see a little thumbnail and when I go to click the message it like asks for a password. What do I do?

Also, I've tried to send picture messages and it will sit in messaging and it says pending.

??

Posted by: Dreaderus

did u setup a password? if not try this

go to mypictures.bell.ca and put in your phone number, and say forgot my password. it should send it to your phone and then try.

if it still loops to the password, then contact technical solutions to get it unlocked (1-877-328-2123)

Posted by: clewis4u91

Yeah libejo, follow the steps that Dreaderus posted. I'm also having problem with picture messages. I CAN NOT receive (woo paying for features that don't work lol) and sending works, sorta. When I send a picture message it always says Pending. I even check out my online album and it shows that the picture was sent. I've sent a few pics to myself to test it out but it only came through once out of the maybe 6 different times I've sent a picture to myself. Gotta call Data Support!

Posted by: outtamymind85

ya had the same issue, looks like i'll be calling data support as well in regards to the picture messages. had a few people send me picture texts and never got them well decided to check the mypictures site and sure enough there are the pictures that i never recieved.

I heard on CTV that Bell charges an $8 monthly fee for just about every individual function of the online portion of this phone if you want to use it... GPS, video's, email, instant messaging, this, that, that , this......... are they freaking serious??? On top of the $10 unlimited internet fee which basically limits you to nothing at all in that case? What the hell ? Is this true folks?

so i just got off the phone with bells technical support in regards to the picture messaging issue and according to them there is nothing wrong with how we've set up the phone its bell's network that is having an issue with the phones, and that they are currently working on fixing the issue. so i guess we'll all just have to be patient with it for now.

Thank you for getting some more information on this. Earlier today I tried sending pictures again and it sorta worked. I was able to receive MMS from myself but the messages would still occationally show up as Pending.

considering this phone is hyped as a media device, they really should have had this working better prior to launching...i can imagine there are a lot of people who bought this, are now stuck in a 3 year contract, and are quite frustrated with it.

Hehe I take the smart, non-economic-friendly way out. I only got on a 1 year contract and in the future, will only go on a 2 year max for a hardware credit. I've paid max price for ALL phones I've had in the past so I've been free to leave whenever I want to.

not really a bad idea, but there is nothing wrong with launching a product that is great and that people will be more than happy to sign a long term contract with...it's good business, and keeping your customers happy will certainly pay off in the long term...every time i see an ad for the Instinct, i can't help but think of some of you guys in here trying to get it to work right...sorry, but Bell really dropped the ball on this one.

Posted by: outtamymind85

ya i found out that pictures that are sent to me via text are being stopped at the mypictures.bell.ca website, i was able to recieve 2 picture texts today, one was right away and the other took a little while and still the same thing if i try sending one it just says pending for the longest time. i was also told that the firmware version BG30 (which is the one on my phone) is supposed to help with this issue a little bit but they still have to code the phone for the network or some ******** like that.

I agree with you 100% (whoa get out the calendar and mark this one down). I wouldn't mind getting a 3 year and a sweet discount if it wasn't for the direction Bell is heading right now. Bell tried to get back on their feet on the 8th with everything fresh. Still doesn't look too good with the HIGHEST SAF in Canada, and charging for incoming text messages. I'm disappointed in Bell for making most of these extra features so expensive. Bell just got stupider. I will give it time though. The issues will eventually be worked out. I will be able to download Opera Mini and speed along with browsing. I'll be able to eventually get a GPS application for free. Just takes time.

yes i am aware on how to update my firmware. and the BG30 is the latest firmware available right now. this is the version that is supposed to help with the picture texting issue until the coding on bell's network is finished (all according to the support tech at bell's call center of course)

Anyone tried this with the Bell release of the phone?
I've thought about it but.....

Posted by: clewis4u91

A represenative from Samsung has told me that in order for these issues to be fixed, both sides need to be notified of the issues. I will provide the link to contact Samsung and Bell. I have an email that I have sent to both parties, and you may copy and paste it if you wish. Feel free to add any other issues into the emails.

EDIT: Wow I already got a response to my email which was sent to Bell less than 5 minutes ago. The issue has been forwarded to the correct department, so please help the cause .

Link to email Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/ca/info/contactus.html (be sure to click on "all phones". It will open a new window with the form to send in.

Link to email Bell: https://www.bell.ca/support/PrsCSrvWls_CtUs_Eform.page

Email to both parties: Hello. I would just like to bring to your attention a few issues with the Samsung Instinct (on Bell Mobility). I hope that they can be fixed in a future firmware update.
- The OBIGO browser needs a lot of work. Sometimes while trying to browse to certain websites, my phone will restart.
- Incoming text messages: After 8PM (eastern time), incoming text messages are showing up under the next day. However, when you 'click' on an individual message, it shows the correct time. I'm not the only one with the issue: http://tinyurl.com/6qkp63
- 'Threaded' text messages: Messages do not seem to be threaded at all. Outgoing messages appear near the top and incoming appear near the bottom.
- Text message notification: I would really appreciate an option that would disable the 'incoming text message' notification. While running applications like a game, Live TV, using the web browser, or listening to music, it would be great if I was not interrupted. Please implement this.
- Picture messaging: Outgoing picture or video messages show up as Pending. However, when I check my Bell online album, it says they were sent successfully. ALSO, I cannot receive picture/video messages. I'm not sure if this is a Bell issue or an Instinct issue, but it would be great if the issue could be looked into.

Thank you for your time. Can you please forward this to the engineering/technical department if this is not the right place to ask? Thank you once again.

I was thinking about doing it too, i just havent gotten around to installing all the drivers etc for it to work.
Has anyone on the Bell network tried the internet buffer hack?

Posted by: clewis4u91

Considering the Bell Instinct doesn't have "Upon powerup, go to main -->settings -->general -->update date profile.", it won't work.

Posted by: dirtyjeffer

chris, do you honestly believe that Bell didn't know these issues existed prior to launch?...sure Samsung will do the politically correct thing and say both parties need to be aware of any issues, but there is NO way this unit has been in use in any sort of testing period without knowledge of what needs to be fixed...kudos for you doing your part, but don't kid yourself.

I'm not sure, that's why I sent them an email . Now that they are aware of the issues, they have no reason to not fix them.

well, i can assure you they were completely aware of the operation of the phone when it was launched...they simply don't care enough about customer satisfaction, reputation or image as much they care about locking unsuspecting people in contracts for 3 years.

Posted by: outtamymind85

well here's a bright thing i figured out today, in regards to backing up your contacts or doing a mass contact upload. i use microsoft outlook with a blue tooth dongle on my computer. while screwing around today i realized that i can send the contacts i create in outlook to my phone as well as i can send all my contacts from my phone to outlook via bluetooth. makes things alot easier now that i know i don't have to input each contact one by one.

oh on another note has anyone else noticed that while listening to the radio or viewing the live tv everything is extremely choppy. i contacted bell and they suggested a hard restart on the phone. i did this and afterwards it worked perfectly for about 15 minutes then it went back to being all choppy again. also i can kill my battery from about 15 minutes of viewing either the radio or tv which really sucks because is this not supposed to be a media based cell phone if you can't do much media on it then what's the point of having those features. it may just be my phone though but i dunno.

Posted by: clewis4u91

I found a little problem. It's not impacting the use of the phone or features or anything, just something that should probably be fixed. The World Clock. I noticed that times for different places are screwed up. Check out the following image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/clewis4u91/2796443425/
Last time I checked, all those places are in the same time zone .

Also, I found a minor spelling error: http://www.flickr.com/photos/clewis4u91/2796442209/

And, here are the pictures of the stupid Bell Media Player errors:

I was just playing around with my phone and i noticed that in conversion calculator, in the temperature section, you cant input negative numbers, so i cant figure out what -20C is in ferenheit, lol, kind of a tiny tiny bug, but still, when winter comes along, ppl might run into this problem.
it worjs the other way, if u put a low farenheit value, it will cnvert it to a negative celcius value

Does anyone else have a problem with some Youtube videos? On my Instinct some videos work great while others are really scrambled, jumpy, and out of sync. When I view the same video on my computer it works fine. The weird thing is, some videos look great on the Instinct.

I dont even bother with YouTube because most of the time the damn media player doesnt load the video...

I'm seriously about to put this phone under my car tire. This web browser is PISSING me off. I go to type something (a forum post or password for example) and sometimes when I submit it, it says I haven't entered any text. This is EXTREMELY frustrating, especially when you type up a huge post and have to type it all over again just to find out that it didn't work again. If Samsung doesn't fix this garbage I WILL NEVER EVER purchase another Samsung phone again!

I've already posted there, and I found out that there isn't an option to update the firmware on the Telus Instinct. Looks like you guys will have to send it in if there really is an update.

Well, I just had to do a 30-day DOA on my Instinct for another one, because my old Instinct would constantly do a soft reset when browsing web pages. Really got annoying when you're trying to do something. Glad I work at a store so I just had to pick another one up, and so far, no resets!

Try going to www.nyt.com. That site always reboots my phone.

hey, i told you guys to wait a month to see how it was first.

tsk, tsk, tsk.

You are here more than the Rogers forum.

Do you think the phone has some hidden blacklist of sites? I also noticed certain sites do it, every single time, although the page loads a bit, then when you go to another page in the site, it restarts the phone.

Any ideas on what's causing this?

The horrible browser. However, some of the sites we can't access can be accessed on Sprint. There is a major browser update coming though. It's supposed to be 10x faster when zooming and panning, and over 200 other issues resolved.

so...i'm just saying that i recommended people be wary rather than guinea pigs to this new device, especially considering there was a fair amount of negative press in the US about prior to Bell launching it...i wished it worked better...i mean, i hate seeing people pay $400 for something and are almost at the verge of driving over it with their car, but come on, you can't say i didn't warn you.

Oh I know. The phone is fine for calling and text messaging (besides the damn timestamps) which is what I use a phone the most for. For a web browser, forget about it. Of course I expect the issues to be fixed in the future, but when is the question. I have thrown it a number of times but only due to the web browser screwing up. Another thing that needs to be fixed is with the music player. .mp4 files (videos) appear in the list along with your other music so if you accidentally "click" on it, the application will lock up. And it takes FOREVER because it scans the memory card for music files and somehow finds these huge .mp4 files and freezes the application again.

Posted by: dirtyjeffer

sounds like you should stick to your U740 if all you want is text and voice...considering the Instinct is touted as a media phone, what good is it if most of its media features (browser, mp3's etc) don't work well on it.

I also like the much bigger screen thats touchable (and actually very responsive). Plus my u740 is capable of running a wider variety of applications. Of course this will eventually change in the future (if Bell really does care about their customers).

What I meant was that does anyone know when these updates will be released. I was hoping someone on the inside or perhaps dealers would know if there's a set date. If Bell puts out an update I would suspect Telus will follow shortly afterwards. It's going to suck to have to bring my handset in because there's no update option on the Telus version.

There are a bunch of features that I was looking forward to with the instinct. I found these features were advertised heavily in the states, not just for sprint.

1) Visual voicemail.

Visual voicemail is the ability to see who left you a voicemail without having to actually dial into your voicemail. You can see it as a list, instead of having to listen to the automated system every single time.

It is featured in a cnet tv video: http://cnettv.cnet.com/9742-1_53-50003691.html

This is kind of a big deal for me, as it seemed to be a feature built into the phone, considering how "seamlessly" it integrated into the phone itself. I really want this feature, at least for bell.

2) A good Media player.

Why do I have to wait so god damn long for this app to load? We've had media players available for over a decade. Why are they so bad at writing these apps? In the same cnet video it outlines briefly the sprint version of the Media player, which looks a tonne more appropriate than the garbage we bell users have. Oh, and then I have to scan all the songs. I can't wait for the day when I'm using an 8 gig SD card and have to wait approximately 30 minutes just to play one measely song because it has to scan

EVERY
SINGLE
FILE
EACH
TIME

3) GPS.

Where did it say that it was a paid service? I have not seen a single person mention it once; until I got the phone. $8/mo? How about included with my already $55 plan, and $130+ price tag? Oh, and it also bugs out. On Crowchild Trail and near richmond (Calgary Alberta Canada) going north, it bugs out and gives absolutely atrocious directions. Instructing me to not only go the wrong way, but to perform illegal maneuvers (turn into oncoming traffic?).

4) News.

Not
A
Single
Canadian
Piece
Of
News
Anywhere.

'nuff said.

5) Real support for flash.

Okay, it's pretty cool I can use all of youtube. However, there are other sites that use flash that I want to watch. Sites like wegame.com, cnettv.com, and plenty others. (Certainly I am not alone here?)

6) Streaming TV.

Okay, so I pay a bit extra (in my bundle actually) for streaming TV. Why on earth is treehouse TV on the list? Name one kid that Bell even sells cells to, let alone an instinct. Also, the service is often bad, reduced service leads to video tearing and artifacting. I sure hope this is improved.

7) MSN services.

Why am I being charged for this? I can surf to the sites, and will eventually have java apps to provide these services anyways. Nobody is going to buy into this once they discover they can get the same service for free. How about making the convenience not cost anything? It's not THAT convenient to begin with.

I didn't even bother finding out how much it costs. Any cost is unacceptable.

That's about it for now. TBH I really do like the phone, I just am appauled at the lack of testing that bell has done on this product up here. It's good but could be bettER.

Posted by: BloodyIron

Oh also:

I cannot add applications I downloaded to my favourites section. I hope this is added as I anticipate downloading plenty of apps for this bad-boy. I know this is not working as I have opera 3.1 downloaded and it does not list (as far as I can find) it anywhere.

Nah, it's just there's not much left to discuss. Bell, please hurry and release this software update!

Posted by: TriCykle

Every time I've sent a picture, it always said Pending, yet my friend had received it in a few minutes. Kind of annoying though.

Posted by: BloodyIron

I found another crash. When I go text message, then click on the icon top left to select a contact, select a contact, then press back (because i accidentally selected the wrong contact) it resets the phone.

Whoo!

UPDATE! Open up your Bell Media Players! There's an update!
Media Player version is now 1.0.6. I will post later today with any fixes and improvements I find.

Media Player Update - Version 1.0.6: I've been playing around and I noticed that compatibility has been improved. More video formats can be played now. Also, try viewing some YouTube videos. It seems to load up right away now. I've watched about 7 videos and none of them have been stuck on the "Loading..." screen anymore. Also, the videos for News articles in Pocket Express now work.

Only when you first open the music player and it notices new content.

I said there was a Media Player update, not Music Player .

Oh I thought music was a form of media. so I guess we need a music and browser update and we're alset

Posted by: clewis4u91

The music player plays music, the media player plays videos . Apparently for the .mp4 files, you can change the extension to .3g2 and it will play in the media player but not get recognized by the music player. I haven't tried it out yet.

Posted by: ecat

Thks for keeping us informed clewis4u91,your efforts are appreciated.

Posted by: clewis4u91

Regarding the Media Player, there will be an update every 2-3 months or so. Their goal is to get at least 30 live TV channels (there's only like, 8 now, and they all suck). And, they're also working on higher quality streams . Thanks to this recent Media Player fix, I don't have to throw my phone when it hangs at the "Loading..." screen, because it doesn't happen anymore!

How many can we expect to be included in the fun 20 package for example?

treehouse tv is inappropriate.

I cannot answer that (because I don't know), but as it is now, $8 for Live TV is most DEFINITELY not worth it. I think they're just going to add a load of channels and expect people to pay $8 because they think "more channels now, so it must be worth it".

Posted by: clewis4u91

More channels have been added.
New live tv channels are:
Vidzone
MuchMusic (coming soon)
MTV
The Comedy Network
Fashion Television

None of these new channels are included with the Fun 20's Media Pack.

Sprint is set to release a firmware update on September 24th. Only time will tell when/IF Bell will release theirs. Bell doesn't communicate with their customers whatsoever so if we do get an update, nobody will know about it until it's released. I'll probably be the first to know because I check for an update every hour or so .

I called Bell's Techline to bring forth my compounding issues that have arrisen over the past month....

1: Phone crashes when trying to sync with bluetooth devices. will reboot 2 or 3 times before it works. Then will reboot again every 20 minutes! Very upsetting.... My bluetooth car kit is now useless with my phone!
2: Phone crashes & reboots when certain words are typed into a text message (ie: Microbrew)
3: Phone crashes & reboots randomly while playing games or surfing the web

Those are my biggest gripes.

The techline told me no one has been complaining about the Instinct and that no updates will be coming because it's a solid phone already and does not need it. I called a second time and got the same story.

I'm a lil pissed now.

They recomended a 'hard reset' but I'll lose all my info. Issue with that? I got games on there that I don't think I can get back without paying for again (GuitarheroIII) and I'm not interested in doing that!

Pshht you didn't pay anything for that . Disappointing that they say there won't be an update. I'm POSITIVE they are aware of the issue. Samsung representatives know there are issues with the phone and Bell knows it as well.

they know there are issues with smasung instinct
I'm on my second instinct phone because of those current issues
and guess what, I still have them with my new phone
and have been on the phone with them about it

wish they would own up to it
I know its a new phone and some bugs have to be worked out
unforunately i am on a plan with them but when its up I will think twice about staying with them

of course they know...they knew there were issues before it was launched (if they actually tested the products as rigorously as they say they do...i don't care what anyone says, this phone was rushed to market before it was ready in response to battle the iPhone...had Bell taken more time, or got it working better, it might have been a decent (albeit more basic) cost effective alternative to the iPhone.

of course they are aweare of the bugs with the instinct

lets hope they fix them, because the instinct is a good phone but could be alot better without the bugs

You got the standard line, Bell support gives on everything. Front line techs never acknowledge known problems. Likely they are not made aware of them. Doesn't mean an update isn't coming.
I went through this with Expressvu recently. Our, and many others, HD PVR's suddenly started having EPG problems. They refused to agree there were any problems, or that a software update was rolling out. Couple days later software update installed and problems went away. Just the way they work.

Well if this is any consolation, my A920 that I've had for over 2 years already still doesn't work the way it should! One would think that would be enough time to track and fix these issues. Guess I'll have to wait until Bell puts out a phone that works properly to upgrade.

what is their incentive to do that??...they would rather you get fed up with it and replace it and renew your contract for another 3 years...fixing the problems doesn't make them any money (at least in their train of thought).

Posted by: BloodyIron

Oh yeah, what happened to visual voicemail? (as seen in the USA).

Posted by: Willhound

OK, more griping from another new Instinct owner.

Somehow, Bell has managed to send me a file that places extra contacts in my phone contact list. At least, I'm pretty sure they weren't there when I first got the phone. In particular, I'm a little p.o'd that there is a "Services" directory that has Directory ***. Taxi and Caller Ring Tunes in it (all pay options of course) that I can't figure out how to delete.

I didn't ask for it to be put there, don't want it, but does anybody know how to get rid of it?

Thanks

i hope they aren't contacts in there from a previous owner, who returned the unit within their 15 day window...sometimes reps don't clear the unit, or don't send it back...they just throw it back on the shelf and sell it to someone else.

I read somewhere (can't remember where, so much to read) that the java on the instinct is incomplete and is part of the reason apps like opera mini are failing. Is this a misunderstanding, the truth, or?

Any info on correcting this if this is an issue?

No, I'm reasonabley sure it was a brand new unit. Got it through a corporate deal with my employer.

My contact list was totally blank when I got the phone. I put a half dozen in myself, but this morning when I turned the phone on, there were three additional items under contacts:
My Info -which I assume is to put my info on me (in case I ever want to text myself????)
Backup - which I assume will back up my contacts if I ever bother connecting to my PC
And then the one that has me p.o.'d
Services...
When you touch services, three listings show .Directory Assistance, Taxi and Caller Ring Tunes. All items that cost, and all things that I will never likely use, but unlike all the other normal contacts there is no garbage can icon to delete them.....You also can't seem to edit them so at least I could move it from the very top of my list.
Just when I sort of start liking Bell again, they do something else to make me shake my head....

Uhh then wtf, don't touch Services... I know it's right there, but you can't take the time to touch the screen and scroll? Those options have ALWAYS been there. If you're seriously too friggen lazy to touch and scroll, then you have issues. Those options are placed at the top for a reason; convenience. If a certain number is so important, put it on your speed dial. No scrolling, and touch a number and it will dial it...

Sounds like some sort of update. Have you recently updated any apps or downloaded any apps?

Really tho, these sort of things are bound to happen. It sounds like they tried to make it as unintrusive as possible by putting it in a category of sorts. However, I cannot yet figure out how to do categories, so theyre a bit ahead of the game.

One of my earlier phones came with the contact for roaming on it. I figured I might want to keep it just in case. Perhaps it is wise to keep a Taxi phone number on there just in case? (Somehow doubt a number listing for a Taxi would cost you anything other than the cost of the cab itself).

Dude
Seriously, I'm not too "friggen lazy", but from the tone of your post, it seems that you are the one with issues. If you don't have the answer to my question, go troll somewhere else.

You missed my point. It is not convenient, it is another hack job by Bell to try and get us to put more $$$ in their pocket. I didn't pay what I paid for the phone to have them put what amounts to advertising in my personal contact list...

Now, does anybody know how to remove it, or not?

Yeah, I did update some of the included programs. Not that I had a choice. When I tried to access them they automatically called for an update. The Taxi is not actually a number, it's a Bell internal call that forwards to the closest taxi service to your location, and yes, there is a charge for the "service". Maybe I'm letting it bug me too much, but it just ticks me off that they would add crap I did not ask for, and that wasn't originally on the phone when I bought it.

It can not be removed. And I'm not trolling. I'm giving you a flat out answer. If you can't take the time to move your finger up the screen something is wrong. They are not trying to gain more $$$ from this. It's for convenience. Does anyone else think Caller Ring Tunes, Directory Assistance, and Taxi, are useless numbers and are just a money grab? (sure they're expensive, but at least they work)

chris, you can't be serious...those are put there to encourage people to use them, which brings in more revenue...sure, some may find it convenient, but i can understand why someone doesn't want them, or at least want them there...i guarantee you Bell makes sure they are stuck at the top with hopes that people will use them, and i bet it will work for many people.

6034 - "calendar alert not working"
5889 - "cannot maintain MSC mount"
6002 - "new/duplicate contact created when saving street address from SMS or email"
6001 - "can't enter text into search bar on yahoo"
6000 - "unsupported navigator object properties crash browser scripts"

The release also marks the first public release of the updated Instinct Web Browser, version 1.1. The new browser is based on an entirely new codebase and brings an 10x improvement to rendering speed, most noticeable in the areas of pan/zoom/resize functionality.

New browser features include:
* Voice Command Button -> hide/show controls; browser controls can be hidden to provide more screen to webpage display
* Improvements to favorites UI allows for sticky mode lock
* 34 other web browser tickets resolved

Individual application upgrades for the MR3 period are expected to go live the week of 9/29 (all dates are estimates and are subject to change with no notice). Exact go-live dates depend on application vendor.

Additionally, firmware structures have been added to facilitate the upcoming MR4 firmware release.

well, it doesn't really matter what Sprint does...Bell has their own firmware...besides, according the Bell, they are not aware of any issues with the device...it's the iPhone Killer, you know.

Posted by: clewis4u91

I keep getting information that Bell will release an Instinct update next month.

EDIT: Twitter users, listen up! There is a twitter application for the Instinct! It's third party software of course, but it works great! Try it out! http://www.chetu.com/mproducts/

You need to install it with BitPim (BE CAREFUL! I RESET MY PHONE BY ACCIDENT).
Here's the link to the jad and jar.

I have a question regarding the functionality of the instinct with Bell....

Does the instinct with bell support pop3 email?? I read online that it can with verizon... but with bell?

1. The Instinct is not even on Verizon.
2. No, Bell has crippled it. You are forced to subscribe to the Windows Live Messenger/Hotmail service for $8/month (or you can use the browser).

Posted by: baxbunny

I got off the phone with a Bell Rep voicing my concern about the issues with the instinct.
Just to re-iterate this again.
They are aware of the Text Messaging issues: Times, order, 8pm->tomorrow, typing certain words makes phone crash.
And the web browser crashing on many sites issues.

I told them about my other issue, with bluetooth stereo headphones. (music doesn't play at full speed, then skips to "catch up" and continues to play at a slow speed, making everything sound deep and slow)
The rep did not know about this issue, but he did know about the rest. Although the bluetooth issue would be more a samsung issue ? maybe?

The bell rep said that they are working on the new firmware, but does not know when it will be released.

Well call me a fool,but I think I'll give the instinct a try,I won't pay another $30 a month for a BB or diamond,so I don't really have a choice?Maybe a lg or u740

Always go the Touch route

but if you pay $10 for browser, $8 for email through Windows Live and $8 for whatever else you have to pay for to get it to work "as advertised", you are basically paying the same price, and still have a toy, not a powerful data device.

Posted by: Gagan604

that's true
and that's one thing that really pisses me off with Bell.

The false advertisements should be a crime. It's amazing how EASY it is for someone to look at the fun 15/20 bundle and be misled into thinking they have access to a lot of video clips/tv content.

If it's $10 for internet, $8 for windows live (piece of **** why did you have to cripple pop3 email??), $8 for GPS...you might as well be with Rogers and get the $30/6gb plan which includes tethering too! (i know it's ending today but I'm referring to a month or two back).

I'm stilll pissed that it's taking so long to fix the damn text messaging time stamp issue. I discovered this the day I got the instinct and reported it and it was escalated but yeah it's taking ages. The fact that Sprint doesn't have this problem but Bell does....cmon Bell

that's OK if it isn't exended...their "regular" priced data that will start tomorrow is much better than everyone else's "regular priced" data plans.

who knows, they might extend it anyway...we will have to wait until tomorrow, but my guess is they won't as they want to sell the new plans.

I have browser included in my plan,I don't need email or text.Just a good phone as far as sound quality and reception, maybe check the weather and sports results with mobile browser.a camera and mp3 player would be a bonus.I,ve read the browser s*cks on the instinct, but it has to be bettER than the 1x wap broser I have now?

I am like you all very aware of the issues with this phone.

Many of us are trying to get updates and changes like the Sprint users. Most of us feel Bell is dropping the ball on this. I have made a petition for us to sign here:

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitio...SamsungInstinct

Please take your time to sign this.

Thanks!

really? i can't stand it. i'm using it to type this and i kept getting logged out of hofo right after logging in. trying to select fields to fill in takes 4 or5 tries to find the 'sweet spot'. and when you do submit data from fields, half of the time it doesnt get sent and you have to do it over again. so many sites crash the browser. thats just off the top of my head, there's lots more. i'll be returning mine and giving the lg dare a shot (i'm on telus)

I agree, I 've had no issues aside from the odd crash.

I agree completely. Earlier today I was trying to use the http://www.translink.bc.ca to check the bus schedule at a particular stop and I can't get past the screen where you select your bus because everytime I submit it, it either says "communication error" or when it does go through, it takes me back to the same screen!

I know it's almost unanimous that we think the browser sucks but I'm just curious as to how come, aside from the crashes and wordwrap/zooming headaches, nobody seems to mention that a lot of pages don't show up the way they are supposed to show up on a desktop?

For instance, http://www.instinct-samsung.com/ has a black/grey background but on my instinct it has the default white background full of text page and it splits it up into many pages if i have images turned on.
On the iphone, or Opera mini on my instinct, it shows up fine. It's the ugly built in browser that can't view it properly.

Lots of forums dont show up the way they do on a computer but I don't think people mention that? They simply say that it's an html browser so pages appear the way they do on a computer. But that's not entirely true?

Posted by: oermens

html isn't as bad as i assumed it would be, except for having to scroll horizontally on most pages. i can bear with that, navigating mobile sites is so time consuming that you might as well let the full html page load instead. one neat thng i found is that google search will render most pages for better viewing on a mobile device, but it seems to use the same ugly template for all pages. the sites which make my browser crash are the simpler sites such as ttc and mobilesyrup, while sites which i would think are more intensive on the browser work fine. and standard gmail looks awful, the text is so small even with 2x zoom.

as much as i am disappointed with this phone, the touch screen is great and the UI is very intuitive. my 6yearold cousin picked up my phone and she knew how to use the browser without asking me. regardless, i will be returning my phone and replacing it with the dare.

Any news on updates?

Posted by: MrBigBell

anyone with news to report? has anyone heard of a firmware or application updates? (considering all the time smasung is putting on sprint\s version)

Posted by: clewis4u91

A fix is in the works.

Posted by: ecat

I can't take it anymore I 'm gonna go get one,let the chips fall where they may.

Posted by: ecat

So far so good, sports and weather are working well on the browser.Sound quality and reception is good, this is all I really need it for, I can wait for the rest of the stuff.

Posted by: ecat

does this feature cost anything, other than mobile browser?

Posted by: daimee

I'm holding out in getting one til the end of the year. My corp plan has it at $219, hoping it will go down a bit before the new year. If not then I may be swayed to the LG Vantage that's around $100 cheaper on the plan or the Touch which is even cheaper but I'm not one to want to hack something to death before it's actually fun/usable.

Is there a way to assign pictures to the contact list?On my old samsung I could take a pic of a friend and when they called, I could see who was calling.

Yes. Click on an individual contact. Hit the Edit button so you can edit their information. Tap on the gray picture to the left of their name. Then it will allow you to take a picture and assign it, assign a picture that you've already taken, or assign a picture you've downloaded. Pick the option you wish .

Posted by: clewis4u91

Another little neat feature will have the phone tell you who's calling/texting. Just go to Settings, Ringers, and slide the bar to ON for Voice Notification (it's at the bottom). When somebody calls, it will tell you who is calling or texting you. It's pretty neat.

Posted by: celfie

I'm sorry if these questions have been asked, I haven't found them.

I just got an instinct, so far so good but for picture messaging, it asks me to enter a password. the user manual suggests that upon first use, picture messaging will prompt me to create an account - which it hasn't done. I tried resetting picture account in settings but it didn't fix anything. so what do i do???

Also, is it possible to change the homepage in the webbrowser and remove ringers from favorite menu?

thanks!

Posted by: clewis4u91

I check for a PRL update and it says Update complete. I check my phone info and it still shows the same number for PRL. It also returns the message "Update complete" even after doing it once. My guess is that they're either going to release an updated PRL, they're just screwing around, or they're testing to see if firmware updates will be able to be downloaded OTA (wink wink).

it would be nice if it could update things OTA (i think some of it can now)...this is a feature Telus has used for about 6 years?

Oh you mean the "not so free" music . You will need to connect the phone to your computer. Just delete the music folder and you should be good. You'll have to reload your personal music.

Call 1-877-DATA-123, press 1, enter your phone number, then press 1 again. Tell them you need to set up your picture messaging account and they will run you through the setup.

Yes, you can change the home page. When your web browser is open, go to your bookmarks and press the Edit button in the top right corner. Click on the bookmark you want to use as your home page. At the bottom of the screen, just slide the bar to "set this page as default".

As for removing Ringers from the Favourites menu, you cannot do that. The only thing you can really do to make it less annoying is move it to the bottom.

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a Samsung Instinct and have it on the Bell network. I'm a bit of a newbie and am wondering if someone can walk me through putting free ringtones on my phone. I have sent them to my phone but when I go to the link to download them It doesn't allow me to. What am I doing wrong?

Is anyone else having issues getting on MSN? I haven't been able to get on for close to 2 weeks now. I went into an Aliant (Bell here in the Maritimes) store, and the girl called Bell for me. After about 20 minutes of checking to see if I was subscribed to the service (why that took so long, i have no idea), they finally came back and told her it was an issue with all Instinct's and they were working on it. Just wondering how true that is.

Posted by: clewis4u91

No idea, why? Because I will never waste $8 a month on a feature that should be free.

Posted by: mercy123

I'm having issues using the browser period. I have only been able to access the internet a handful of times over the past week. Would love o call tech support but the only time I have enough time to spare to discuss the problems in depth (which we all know HAS to be done and even then they will only get half of it) they are closed...

What a pain in the ***... and if it's a known issue why can't they just tell us via text or voicemail that there is a problem instead of us having to seek out the answers ourselves - they know who owns what....

So much for the iPhone killer.

Posted by: MacD

It wasn't marketed as the IPhone Killer....

...It's the Apple Eater. Which could mean many things.

Get it right

Posted by: dirtyjeffer

its been a while now...i thought some ads did say iPhone killer (perhaps that is too aggressive, so maybe they didn't) although the media and people in here certainly portrayed it as such.

Posted by: MacD

Everyone uses 'IPhone Killer' when comparing new touch screen devices to the IPhone (Including the Instinct) Mainly in reviews and blogs though. I don't think many service providers/manufacturers use this term though.

Bell only advertised as Apple Eater as far as I recall.

Though it means basically the same thing.

Posted by: angekfire

I doubt Bell would market it as an iPhone killer, unless their target market is murderers.

Posted by: clewis4u91

Mark your calendars. Numerous Bell store locations are aware of an update that would be on October 24th. I will have to call around and confirm. It's just a rumour but, apparently it will only fix the freezing issues for now, and the version will be BK30. Bell is certainly aware of the issues now and I'm sure they're working on it, finally.

Posted by: signalpirate

i called up bell yesterday needed to get my photos account reset.
I also asked them about a possible firmware upgrade for the instinct.
I told them that i heard that bell is totally ignoring the fact that there is a problem, or that its up to samsung to get a fix out.
On other forums i've read that people have contacted samsung who has said that no.. bell hasn't even submitted any tickets.
I told the csr... lets get a clear answer to this.. cuz this is rediculous... Sprint has had two updates... there are petitions on the web to get bell to do something to fix this issue.
The guy was really understanding and asked me to stay on hold while he asked the technical helpdesk guys...
a minute later.. i get the helpdesk guy on the phone.... and he asks what the issue is..
"ok here goes:"... and i started naming stuff... random resets, browser crashes, voicemail time off 6 hours ( not to be confused with envelope information).. and he replies.. yeah.. i had a call like that earlier today...

basically they are aware of the issues... when a fix will come out??? they dont have a clue... there is one in the works... but like he said.. " we're always behind the americans ( sprint)"
so we have to wait.

Posted by: BloodyIron

still waiting...

you do realize that before this phone was even launched, i suggested people hold off until they know how good it will be and not be suckered into buying it the day it comes out...you really can't complain if you don't heed the warning.

Posted by: sunkissed13

i did heed the warning waited a whole month
Ive waited almost 2 yrs for a new phone and would hoep to god the voyager or the samsung glyde or the LG Keybo would come to bell and then finally I just gave up I figured the instinct was the best I would get since I waited for every single december/summer lineup and nothing worth it was coming out, like last winter was crap so i figured this one would be the same. And now i find out the voyager is coming, I'm so extremely upset lol i gues there is nothing i can do but wait for my the credits to start rolling in again

Anyone know how to record movies longer than 20 secs? This thing is pissing me off

Also, anyone noticed that after recording a movie and playing it back, even when the noise is turned off, you hear a loud hissing noise from the speakers. Like WTH is that?

Posted by: iant56

push the button that looks like a film strip while in the recorder interface.

Posted by: BloodyIron

Anyone know when Bell actually is going to release any firmware that actually fixes bugs?

Posted by: shuntu

--removed--

Sorry! but i've fixed my issue. :S

great forum btw.

Shuntu.

Posted by: BloodyIron

FIRMWARE UPDATE.

At first try it seems to resolve at least the browser crashing.

Posted by: baxbunny

FINALLYYYYYY YAY! downloading now!

Posted by: baxbunny

So far, what i've tested from previous bugs that i've known about, it looks like they fixed the texting to show the proper order, so instead of being all my messages then all friends msgs, they are now 1 after another, if they came that way!
Web browsing sites that never worked before works now.
And the texting thing with "microbrew" doesnt crash the phone anymore!

Things they still need to fix:
Bluetooth stereo headphones synced with phone listening to music is slowed, and skips, and lags.

more to come as i test more out!

I guess bell had decent timing since its holiday season now, and the instinct might be selling more, and more ppl will be happy with it because it got rid of some annoyances.

Posted by: mercy123

it's about bloody time ..... can't wait for this crap phone to finally live up to my old clunker.

I hate it when I make a baddddd decision and this phone was right on up there with one of the worst I've made.

Posted by: clewis4u91

GPS is free now. Apparently it's free for one month but would it not ask you upon entering the app? Oh well, my TomTom is better!

Posted by: signalpirate

how does webpage scrolling work ? i've read that it somehow uses the camera for light detection to scroll up and down depending on how you hold it??? my battery is low so i have to wait till i get home to charge it up and update the firmware
