...Not that soon? Next week is awfully sudden.

This has been talked to death on the TELUS, Bell, and Rogers forums... yes they're switching, yes you'll be able to buy 3G "GSM-variant" aka HSPA phones from TELUS and Bell in 2009. The same type of 3G phones that Rogers sells (i.e. iPhone, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, etc.) will work fine and be available on TELUS and Bell.

Hooray!

PS No, it's not technically "GSM" since GSM is 2G. It's the 3G evolution of GSM...

some people like it simple

gsm = simcards
cdma = no simcards

dont make it more complicated. bell and telus are going GSM.

The next generation of CDMA uses the equivalent to SIM cards.

So does iDen right now.

And so will LTE!

But yes, as far as what most people "think of" as "GSM", TELUS and Bell are rolling out a "GSM" network. You just can't post that without a whole bunch of qualifications, because the more technical people will come out of the woodwork and point out how you are technically wrong and confuse everyone even further.

It's like pointing out that "Windows Mobile 6" is actually Windows Mobile 5.2, given a whole new version designation for marketing purposes. The real Windows Mobile 6 won't ship until 2009/2010, but if you say that you confuse more people than you inform!

Like by pointing out that GSM is a set of standards, and CDMA is a technology.

Most people who think GSM are thinking about a TDMA system, when Bell and Telus will be, if the rumours are true, launching a W-CDMA network.

Speaking of confusing, I think you mean WM 7, for late 2009...

I mean WM6, which will be *branded* WM7 for marketing reasons. (The product branded WM6 is actually just WM5.2) But that's a subject for a different thread!

Belus has a much larger high speed footprint than Rogers does (especially in the EVDO vs HSDPA)

3G has been out for ages, even 1xRTT is considered 3G

They also have a much larger footprint, period! The coverage of Bell in the Maritimes is SEVERAL TIMES better than Rogers. Out west and up north the situation is almost the same. If Bell & Telus keep the roaming agreement they have now with the next generation of hardware, Rogers is in a pickle!
