I remember reading that some new data plans were scheduled for Oct 1st. Any update on that?

well, knowing bell, wait about 6 weeks, then copy and paste the Rogers Data plans...of course, be prepared for all kinds of exciting scripting praising the offers and how good they are and how Bell is promoting value for customers who want data.

Agreed. Bell is usually the last carrier to do anything. Also, wait for Telus to make the change THEN wait 6 weeks before Bell even hints or comes out with anything new.

and then, there will be that pesky fine print. No tethering, no streaming, no this, no that, extra for MSN, music, SMS, tv clips, GPS, and SAF that can go up every month for the rest of your contract and there is nothing you can do about it because it is a "feature" and not part of the plan, and, oh yeah, a new $4.95 monthly fee to have your number unlisted, just like a land line.

Let's face it folks. For telcos, the cost of NOT doing something is very expensive. Think about it for a moment here. Imagine the amount of paper they do NOT have to buy because your phone number is NOT published. Think about the cost of the ink that is NOT used. Think about the weight that is NOT there when they print and ship a smaller telephone directory. Think about the bandwidth that is NOT used because nobody can find you and call you. Think about the extra staff that is NOT hired and the benefits that are NOT paid because of all of this. Pretty soon it all adds up.

Do you really think that the sophisticated software that makes throttling possible grows on trees?

This is why it is necessary for them to charge you $4.95 a month for NOT doing anything for you, like NOT providing the bandwith you were promised when you signed that three-year contract. And since you are Canadian you will NOT object to this and just roll over and accept all of it, won't you? After all, you cheerfully pay for airtime NOT used when you pay for two full minutes of "airtime" after a 61 second call, don't you? NOT using those 59 seconds is pretty expensive and someone has gotta pay for this. That someone is you! If you are happy about this, make sure nothing changes. And you will do that by NOT voting.

It was the opposite Q4 2007

The new data sharing plans were already released (late Aug if memory serves)
The only advantage is Blackberry can now pool data with Windows Mobile devices

Not true. They are the pioneer of charging incoming text. LOL

Bell is the reason data rates are lower.

Go back to Q4 2007 with air card pricing and HTC Touch $7 data.

Make that $5/month. Over here in the Maritimes, I still have two lines grandfathered at that price and I ain't complaining;-)

The real reason, and we can all be thankful for this, is Apple's iPhone which was introduced to the GSM world when our dollar was at par with the US. Then Canadians learned that it was possible to have unlimited internet access for peanuts, i.e., $20/month. At that time it would have cost thousands a month on any Canadian carrier.

Of course, cheap rates were nothing new in the US. Sprint had been offering their all-you-can- eat-data on the HTC Apache 6700 for $15/month (which you could share for $22) for some time. The only difference is that nobody outside the US or HoFo knew that. When it became clear that Rogers would probably offer the iPhone for Xmas Bell had to do something in a hurry. The best they could offer was an iPhone wannabe, the HTC Touch and the quickest way to bring it to market was to make the cheap WAP browser plan available for it, with full HTML access. That's why it was available for $5/month. Then it went to $7, and then $10 but now it is $30.

Thank you Apple. We may never use your iPhone but we appreciate the fact that YOU are the single reason why we have fairly decent data rates in Canada today.

they still need to create something for corp customers, something for voice plans under $30

quoted for truth.

I thought I read somewhere that Bell was going to be releasing 50 dollar BES plans with some decent amount of transfer, instead of 30MB.

I personally think the 25 for 500MB is a great start, especially that you can tether with it as well. The 15 for 2MB is abit odd.
