need help with w580i to get full mp3 ringtones

I have been researching all day on this. The closest I have come to an answer is that I need to extract the customize.xml file off the phones file system using either FAR with SEFP or jdflasher, or XS++ and modify the file then reupload it to the phone. I have been unable to get any files off the phone using XS++, the download option is greyed out. I have been unable to use jdflasher to get files off, it just pops up an error box so fast that you can hardly read the error, something about being unable to read the file, and with SEFP the file comes down as a 0kb file with nothing in it. I just want to unlock the mp3 ringtone functionality, I do not require the phone to be unlocked unless that is the only was to accomplish this. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

You just want to use .mp3's as ringtones? I didnt have to do anything to the phone itself. But, you have to cut the .mp3 to a certain length on your pc if you want to use it as a ringtone, then put that file on your phone. I just pick my favorite part of the song, save 22 seconds of it as an .mp3 file (I use xilisoft video converter, but there are many others as you know), then put it on my phone in the ringtone folder, and apply it as a ringtone.

Yeah, easiest way to get mp3 ringtones is to cut em down to 25-30 seconds, since that's how long the phone rings before going to voicemail anyways.

I know but that is really a bit of a hassle. I mean I already have a bunch of full length mp3s on my phone (use it as an mp3 player) so having to chop them and save them with a different name seems like a bit of a hassle. I like to use different songs for different callers and it would take quite a bit of time to figure out all the songs, cut them down, rename them and copy them over. I had read somewhere that it was a quick fix, and you just had to edit the customize.xml file or something along those lines. I would also like to change what the media net button does.

you may have to debrand for that.

You do have to debrand for that. There is a sticky in this forum on how to go about that very thing.

A hassle? It would take about 30 seconds for each song if that, and that is cutting, saving, and putting them in your ringtones folder of your phone. Wow. Enjoy your default ringtones

Follow these steps to get full ringtones without debranding your phone:

1.) Download these programs if you don't have them already. Make a new folder on your desktop and save everything including the programs to it so you don't have to go fishing around for them. You will need your data cable also.

XS++ found here:
http://www.se-nse.net/gbrooks3/XS++/download.php

XML Marker 1.1 found here:
http://www.download.com/XML-Marker/...4-10369541.html

Main, FS, and Custpack files found here (will have to unrar them I believe so extract them to the same folder you saved them to):
http://rapidshare.com/files/1371205..._RED52.zip.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/1371206..._RED52.zip.html
http://rapidshare.com/files/1371206...T_USA_.zip.html

Now your ready to begin the steps:

1.) open XML Marker 1.1

2.) click open and go to your custpack folder which should say TPA and find the file inside labeled customize.xml and click open

3.) once open, the file will come up and you will scroll all the way down to the bottom. close to the bottom you will find a line that looks like this:
restriction>ringtones>2<ringtones<restriction

4.) delete this entire line and delete all the spacing out of the line you just deleted (make it look like you made no changes to the document).

5.) save the file and close the program

6.) THIS STEP IS TRICKY: GO TO YOUR CUSTPACK FOLDER AND IT SHOULD SAY TPA AND DRAG IT TO THE DESKTOP. NOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO IS ALSO FIND THE XS++ PROGRAM FOLDER AND OPEN IT. ONCE OPENED YOU WILL FIND A FOLDER LABELED OWN_CUSTPACK, OPEN IT. NOW DRAG THE TPA FOLDER INTO IT. WHAT THIS DOES YOU WILL FIND OUT LATER ON.

7.) now open XS++, this program allows you to flash your phone. once open you will see a button that says connect. before you click this plug your data cable to your computer, turn off your phone, take the battery out and put it back in. DO NOT TURN IT ON. now with your phone slider closed and the phone off, click connect. hold the C button on the front of your phone and connect your data cable to your phone. you will see all your phone info pop up in the program.

8.) now you have to choice to flash the main, fs, and custpack. what you will do is click the main "..." button and find the main file that you downloaded previously. it is an .mbn file and should be this: W580_R7AC001_MAIN_CINGULAR_LA_RED52.mbn

9.) now do the same thing for the fs file. click on the ... button and find the fs file, it is a .fbn file and should be this: W580_R7AC001_FS_CINGULAR_RED52.fbn

10.) now click and select the custpack dragdown. YOU WILL FIND THE 580I IS NOT ON THE LIST SO SELECT "own custpack". this is why we put the tpa file in the own_custpack folder on step 6.

11.) click flash, this process will take about 6-10 min. WAIT TO DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE UNTIL THE PROGRAM TELLS YOU "IT IS NOW OK TO DISCONNECT YOUR PHONE" OR YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE.

12.) once disconnected, take your battery out after about 10 seconds and put it back in. now turn on your phone. you will go through the setup and you should be ready to go.

I HOPE THIS HELPS SOME NOOBS LIKE ME. I JUST LEARNED HOW TO DO THIS TOO. BUT, I WILL TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOU BRICKING YOUR PHONE. IF YOU DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DOING THIS, DO NOT DO IT.

I am attempting your walkthrough for my W580i, neillitke, and have found that the links in your post are broken, atleast for the RapidShare. I am located in Canada (On Rogers if that matters), and was wondering if the custpack that I need will be for the Canadian reigon, or if the generic America custpack will work for me. I have the Main Red52, and Europe FS. Will these somehow conglomerate, and end up working in the end?

Any help would be great.
