Gd87 Serial Problems

help
i brought a serial cable for my gd87 but cant get it to connect on any kind of software for the phone,where as my friends gd87 connects straight the way ..
ive checked the version of software on my phone and its A19-19 is this the reason as my freinds is a22 i would update it myself if i could get the cable to work.
if so where do i go for my update..

I read in some post saying that the serial cable might be malfunctioning so it is best for you to get a usb perhaps?
