Is Siemens A56 unlocked by default?

Hi community,

This may be a dumb question and I don't have a Rogers SIM to test, but I notice through the Siemens A56, there is a menu option to specify your carrier.

With this option, if I choose Rogers instead of FIDO and place a Rogers SIM in the phone will it adapt and allow me to use the Siemens phone for my Rogers account?

I purchased this handset through FIDO and I know FIDO locks their handsets, but I also know some, come unlocked such as the Nokia 8890. Since this option was in the phone to specify your network, I thought this may be an option.

If not, I would like to get this phone unlocked and I'm in the Greater Vancouver area. I'll post an unlock message to the B/S/T forum if required, but I'll await feedback.

If anyone in this section does unlocking though, feel free to PM me.

Thanks,

Shane Escher

IMO the phone is locked.

I agree!

I'm thinking the phone is locked to FIDO, but if unlocked, a phone will work with any GSM carrier and there is no need to specify the network you are running on.

Why is this an option in the Siements A56 phone. When I choose this, it states:

"Please Wait" and it pulls back a list of GSM carriers being:

FIDO
Rogers

As stated above, if a phone is unlocked, it will work with any GSM carrier, so what's the point of a menu option asking what carrier you wish to use?

Thanks Again!

In a local situation, that menu doesn't do much

but in a Roaming situation, you MIGHT wanted to choose which network you want to use, given that you have a choice

like when you roam in the US with Rogers, you can choose either Cingular or AT&T

or if you're in Britian, you can choose either Vodaphone, Orange, O2, etc

or in the imaginary world where you can roam between GSM network in Canada, you can choose either Rogers or Fido

i bought the A56 from Fido and it is locked.
I live in NY.

Fido wouldn't unlock it for me and tmobile couldn't get FIDO to give up the access code.

Let me know if anyone can unlock it!!!

thanks
