Best Electronic gadgets to bring on a trip

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I will be going out of the country early next year on a trip and I'm planning what to bring with me; my camera of course, laptop is kind of necessary, cellphone needed. Should I bring my mp3 player? What about my internet tablet? External HD will needed I supposed. I got a set of portable speakers might comes in handy in the hotel room..... But soon as I realize, my carry on luggage is already full and heavy!

I want to know what kind of electronic gadgets you guys bring when go on a long trip, especially hours on the plane and at the airport. What multimedia devices you use to kill time? Which mp3 player give the longest battery life for music listening? Best for video watching and decent battery life? Any good all around device that can really perform when we put it to the test? Share your thought please!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/109)

Maybe you should try to enjoy your vacation--by taking a vacation from the gadgets? LOL

This reminds of a weekend retreat I took a few years back. We were on a boat tour of a scenic area. There was a die-hard businessman on the boat, conducting a conference call on his cell while balancing his laptop on his knees. I don't think he got to enjoy the boat tour whatsoever.

Good one The reason I started this post is to get a feel of what normally people bring on a trip, so I can eliminate all the useless gadgets and bring a couple useful one. I will be spending at least 14 hours on the plane, not counting few hours here and there at the airport. What's good to kill time in a situation like this? what's a good media player that can last a good 9-10 hours? I bought a media tablet recently with a decent size HD so I don't have to bring my laptop and my external HD. I also want to get the C905 camera phone so I don't have to bring a phone and a camera, I assume that will work, but sometimes quality is an issue compare to a actual digital camera. Please tell me what other good gadgets to bring along the trip that can save space, easy to carry and do multi tasking
Share your trip experience. Thank you all!

I would bring:

Laptop
Cellphone
Camera
MP3 player

If there is a plug on the plane, and there might be since you will be on a long flight, you can use the laptop for movies, games, whatever. MP3 player for music, but 14 straight hours might kill the battery. I would take a book or some magazines or a sleeping pill to kill the time. Digital camera doesn't take up too much space, so bring that for the actual vacation. Leave the laptop and whatever at the hotel, and don't be buried by electronics.

If my camera is going with me (and it always is), then my laptop will most likely need to go if the trip is any longer than a few days. If the laptop is going, then so is two external travel HD's for back-up. Cellphone has a good mp3 player built in and hot swappable memory, so if I'm desperate for space I can leave the mp3 behind. (but my mp3 player is so small, so what's the point.)

I also carry a small LED flashlight. It's small, very efficient, bright, white and red lighting and made of black metal that has a lanyard attached. It's great for seeing around in unfamiliar territory and can be used as a self defense tool if needed. (You can either blind someone or swing it around on the lanyard. It uses 3 AAA batteries, so it can pick up some decent go. The barrel diameter also fits nicely inside of an open fist.)

a decent cam phone (K790a or C702)
a 3G phone as modem (TM506)
PDA as pocket internet device + audio player (HP211 with 48GB of storage)
a laptop (an aging Dell Inspiron 6000d, no branding)
probably bring Cradlepoint router to hook up TM506 to tether over wifi

and I have 2 USB fingers (one 8GB, another is 16GB)

I hate bringing my laptop when traveling, because I have to take out to past the airport security check everytime and every countries that I been to, quite annoying. So on this trip, I'm not planning to bring the laptop but my archos, act as laptop and external HD, "road test"
Should I bring the camera or invest in a better camera phone? I still have my K850, but honestly, the quality is so so. If I bring my camera, that means I'm taking my W595 as my mp3 player to save space.
I also thought of GPS phones to bring along, that means more gadgets in my traveling bag, damn
Any good GPS build in, with a good mp3 player? Seems like the C905 is the way to go.

Cellphone cameras will always be subpar compared to any decent camera due to sensor size in relation to pixel count. Sony is working on a bigger CMOS sensor for phones. ( http://www.dpreview.com/news/0811/0...sorcamphone.asp ) Problem is that they instantly decided to cram a bigger sensor with as many pixels as they could. So if you want pictures that you'll actually want to look at again, I'd consider taking your camera and not count on your cellphone as the primary camera.

I know exactly what you mean, that's why camera phone is my second option. I'm gonna bring my digital camera, my internet tablet and maybe I buy the w902 as mp3 player before I go out of the country So that covers everything, I hope Now I know I'm just missing a better walkman phone

I bring...

My T-Mobile UMA (Samsung Katalyst) phone - so I can roam on WiFi when I have no cell service. And I have a Nokia 3595 with me too (just in case we get in an area w/out wifi that has poor RF - since the 3595 is an RF king!).

I also bring along my Zune MP3 player to listen to music. And my Canon RebelX camera to take photos!

Those are about the only two electronic gadgets I need. Music.Talk.Text.Photograph - that's all I would want to do on a vacation - since I'm usually hiking, or touring places don't have too much time to do stuff with the gadgets.

The Zune is to keep me entertained during the plane/train ride. The cell phone is for emergency purposes, and calling back to home every now and then. The camera is for well... TAKING PICTURES!

Wonder how well does the asus perform? I started to see more of these "mini" laptops and they are pretty cheap, how different are they than a full size laptop?

it's great if you often use laptop on the road with some basic task (full web, email, streaming, word processing, excel)
have bt installed, can tether a phone to access 3G, no wifi needed

I'll be in visiting Hong Kong and China late March for few weeks. 3G service is not popular there and it's expensive. I'm not planning to bring my laptop, it's big and heavy, plus a hassle to go through airport security. My media tablet can do the web browsing, play music when I'm in the hotel and act as an external HD to transfer photos and stuff. I'll bring my digital camera of course. I'm still waiting to see if there's anything good to get before the end of March We'll see
Thanks for the input
