Hi !

i am new to sip and voip, i setup an account on terrasip.com and am able to make calls over the internet via my phone ( nokia E71)

I have a question though, is there a way to setup an online number and receive incoming calls over the internet as well, rather then using the cellular minutes ??? i mean where someone calls that number and my phone rings but the call is over wifi or 3g, and i dont lose any minutes...

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance..

Hi there,

While I don't own an E71 (I have its older brother, an e61i), I receive and make VoIP calls all the time on wifi.

<UPDATE> To receive calls over 3G/Wifi, you'll need to get a DID number with your SIP account (e.g., a phone number to terminate on). It can be in any area-code you want (e.g., an overseas area code so family can call you without making an LD call). It's usually a small monthly fee (I pay $1.95 USD a month).

In my case, I have an additional Toronto VoIP number (that I use for business). Usually, once you get that DID number, it's applied to your default SIP account. You can then go into the TerraSip interface and change your CallerID to your new number so that VoIP calls show up with your new number.</update>

I did have one problem though, in that I could make calls, but after registering with my voip service (voip.ms), I could only receive calls for the first 2-5 minutes.

This was due to Firewall/NAT traversal issues.

Here's what I did to fix it.

Disconnect from your Voip Service
1) Go to "Connect -> Internet Telephone"
2) Select the currently connected item and disconnect from the voip service.

Get the Nokia SIP VoIP Settings App
1) Go to the Nokia SIP VoIP Settings application page.
2) VERY IMPORTANT: Use the Dropdown and select V2.x
3) Download the v2.x application and install on your phone
NOTE: It's best to do this over-the-air using your phone's built-in wifi or use a sync-cable and install via PC-Suite

Add your Firewall/NAT settings
1) Go to "Installation" -> "SIP VoIP Settings"
2) Select "NAT firewall settings" in the "SIP VoIP Setting" menu
3) Select "Domain parameters" in the "NAT firewall settings" menu
4) Select a SIP profile, like "terraSip" (What ever you named it)
5) We can set two NAT keep-alive parameters in the setting page:

That got it working for me over wifi.

You can also use the "VoIP services" part of the application to make edits to the existing profile (Options -> New -> Use Existing Profile) and change the codecs to G.729 (which is suppose to be the most efficient).

Of course your mileage will vary. I don't use it on 3G (no NAM support for my older phone), but wifi works great. I've read that VoIP calls over 3G do work in a pinch, but there can be massive latency and echo based on caller traffic.

Good luck.
