signed up for Skype

I have recently dropped my landline and signed up for Skype (1 country subscription). I love it. Should have done it long time ago. I use a headset to make my international calls & use my mobile phone for local & long distance calls.

I have a Skype phone and I use it as a secondary phone. It has never really given me any problems whenever I've used it. One of the reasons why it is my secondary phone is because where I live (in Canada), Skype does not have any local numbers. The best that I can do is to get a US number.

The SMS feature of Skype is a bit buggy... at least in Canada where I can't get a confirmation code so that my outgoing SMS displays my cellphone number instead of my Skype handle/alias.

I find Skype's quality for voice comparable to MagicJack. MagicJack is cheaper but has some bugs as well as limitations.

I use skype currently as a backup when my other phone lines are in use, or when I'm travelling. I primarily make toll free (1-800) calls with it as those don't incur any charges in the US. Since calling a toll free call center can use up a lot of minutes, I am able to scale back plans on mobile.

I haven't had any major quality issues with it and certainly recommend it.

Skype is really far better than landline. I too have switched from landline to skype and I am enjoying it.

Skype. I love it. No contract. Cancel anytime.

I have manage to use nimbuzz with skype on 3G network. I don't need to be by my computer to make calls now.

I just signed up for Skype, not to use as a replacement for my phone but to be able to call and chat (text & video) with other Skype users. I have a few concerns about running Skype. The first one has to do with the way it can use your internet connection. The second has to do with Skype being a closed, proprietary system. Finally, it's one more thing to slow down my PC soaking up megabytes while running in the background.

There are all sorts of free ways to call between Gizmo, Google Talk, ICQ, etc., but only now is there a way to make limited free calls from SIP to Skype and AFAIK you can only Skype-out to call other VOIP services.

I purchased and installed a D-Link DPH-50U Skype-PSTN adapter which sits between my PC and telephone. In theory, I should be able to call a Skype user by dialing ##NN (where NN is the speed-dial number assigned to the user). The only problem is that Skype's current software (which you must use) does not support a speed-dial list.

I think I'm going to return the DPH-50U and only run Skype when I need to communicate with someone who uses only Skype.

remember you can also use any decent WM Wifi phone as a Skype client, and they are readily available for $100 or less (e.g. the 8525). and such phones will allow you to use your Skype acct anywhere you can find wifi access, even overseas... works great....

Can you post how you got Nimbuzz to work with Skype on 3G ?

I have the monthly subscription with Skype for Unlimited Calls within US and was wondering how to get it to work with Nimbuzz or any other service on my Nokia E71

Thanks !!!

I'm currently using a Nokia e61 S60 (Symbian) phone. It has a built-in SIP client. So, I've got the phone loaded down with Gizmo, Truphone and Fring. Gizmo now has free calls to Skype via their OpenSky project. You just just enter "skype_"<username> in place of a phone number or sip:<username>@opensky.gizmo5.com to call a Skype user.

I find that Gizmo does much the same thing that Skype does but is doesn't treat other systems as persona-non-grata. Really, Skype should provide a free SIP-out gateway, but AFAIK they don't.

I use Skype with my homephones for about 1 year 1/2 and I never had that problem. I assume that you already had assigned a speed-dial to your favourite contacts (right-click on contact's ID -> Set speed-dial). Maybe you should look into your DPH-50U's settings, there are two possibilities to set the key sequence for dialing (either ##NN#, or *#NN#), if not even four (I think the last key could be either # or *).
You should look into settings, to see which key (# or *) changes the default channel (which is PSTN for DPH-50U) to USB.
Me, I could even use 2 adapters for the same computer, one DPH-50U and one Yealink B2K, the latest linked with Yahoo!Messenger through Yahoo!Mate, and I could also dial Y!M contacts (I mean, their speed-dial) like: *NN** (if I'm not wrong).

What version of the Skype program are you using? I have v. 4.0.32.206. AFAICT, there is no right click to set speed dial.

When I go to Help and enter "speed dial", I see:
Quote:
Q. Speed dial doesn’t seem to be working in latest version of Skype. Why?
A. The Speed dial feature is not available in the latest version of Skype.

Skype would not connect to the Skype software version shipped with my DPH-50U. It required that I download the latest version to continue. Perhaps if I could have downloaded a slightly out of date version I could have gotten it to work.

You're right, I'm using the latest 3.8.32.xxx version, I could send it to you.
I wasn't aware of the lack of this feature in Skype 4.

Thanks but I already returned the DPH-50U. I think I'm going to get a similar SIP box instead. I'd be concerned that when Skype sunsets your version that some of the features of the Skype box will stop working.

having issue with Skype and nimbuzz today. Calls not connecting. Grrr.
