Can a cell phone be mounted in a truck with an external antenna?

My Brother in law is on Bell. He uses about 2000 minutes a month

Most of his calls are from his truck

He is wanting to put a phone in his truck with an external Antenna.

Is this possible? He gets headaches and does not like having the phone pressed agaist his head all the time. He is worried about the Radio Waves harming him and was thinking if he had a phone in his truck with an external Ant, the radio waves would be outside his truck

Also what kind of plan would be best for him with averaging about 2000 minutes a month, including about 30 minutes of LD. He does not want voicemail but he does want Call Display and caller alert.

The so-called health issues relate to the fact that the phone itself is pressed against your head. Why not use a speakerphone in the truck?

For 2000 minutes, are most of his calls incoming or outgoing. He can get free incoming which will save a lot. He can also a a callback service (sold externally) that will convert all his calls to incoming thus reducing his monthly bill

Motorola M800? http://www.bell.ca/shopping/en_CA_O...e/66858.details

Or how about this: Motorola T505 Bluetooth Portable Car Kit (also on bell.ca)

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8830/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/109)

I'd recommend a Bluetooth headset. It's a cheaper solution than the phone mentioned above by Boukie. Though voice quality would be better on the installed phone.

Bluetooth improves safety by using extremely low levels of RF between the headset and phone. Don't use a wired headset, as this actually increases RF exposure (the wire conducts RF into your ear).

Further, most governments are considering (or already implemented) hand held cell bans while driving. Headsets would put drivers in compliance with such laws.

GREAT... so now we got truckers of 18 wheelers, rolling down the road ready to crush anything in their path, talking on the cell instead of concentrating on the road... sigh...

at least he is looking to an alternative to holding the damn phone instead of using his hands on the steering wheel... just get a headset.

I'm more worried about you talking on your phone in your car, than the professional driver talking on his phone.

How is this different from them using their CB radios?

It is. Studies indicate that "handsfree" kits do not improve safety. The advantage of old two-way systems (half-duplex radios used by taxis, ambulances, cops, hams, CBers) is that there are no interruptions when you are holding down that PTT (push-to-talk) switch until you get your thumb off the switch. When you do that you are ready to listen. With full-duplex (cell phones) conversations the other party can INTERRUPT your conversation at any time by simply talking. This extra distraction is what is likely to increase the possibility of an accident.

Btw, in provinces and states where cell communications are illegal, two-way systems are still legal. Ham operators in QC don't need headsets, etc.
