ANYONE who tells you to buy a Blackberry over this phone or HTC product is on something and should be ignored.
This phone for me was the quintessential mobile device. I bought this phone because I started at IBM and was required to have a form of voice communication. I was forced to have a blackberry as well, but it was purely used for parts and signing off on my hours. The UTStarcom 6700 became my constant link. I used it for all my files for work such as word and excel files. If my boss needed something but wasn't of great urgency he could email me on my phone.
The reception on the phone was crystal clear, I only lost a call when I dropped into a valley or was an underground parking garage, and as I was all over southern alberta good reception was essential. I'm also pretty sure I have over 200 contacts on the device as well.
On my personal time the phone had a great battery life when actually talking on the phone. When the phone was idle it lasted days. The only thing I will grant is when WI-FI is on it will suck the battery pretty good. The txt message feature worked flawlessly and even more so since the keyboard keys are big enough that I'M not pushing multiple buttons at the same time.
When I left IBM as I had paid for the phone originally I got to keep it. Since my contract and my Q were still active and i had no data plan on my phone I would continue to use my Q till my contract is up in march of this year.
Since I left I have used and done tons of things with and to the phone. (or ppc) I have upgraded the phone to WM 6.1, use Opera 9 for surfing on my wifi network or anywhere I go that a PC is unable to go. The touch screen works perfectly with the phone. I can slide up and down full webpages with Opera almost as well as an iphone. The fact that it's windows has allowed me to do SOOOO much. Primary example. I used my spare PC and plugged it into my TV and stereo system in my living room. Connected it to my network and using a mobile version in UltraVNC i use my 6700 to remote into my pc as a control to watch dvd's, home movies, listen to online radio through MY spare pc which i don't have a keyboard an mouse connected too. I will grant the small screen size on the 6700 means I have to scroll alot but the fact its, it still works.
The 6700 to me was the Quintessential phone.(ppc) ANYONE who tells you it's a piece of garbage has never used one or never used it to it's full capacity. Even using mine as I have i'm sure there are still more things I can do with it. I had some jerk trying to hook on to my neighbors WI-FI the other day by just standing on the street in front of his house. My next project is to see if i can use the phone to either remote into the network myself (with my neighbors permission) and shut the jerk down (and i don't mean by just locking the router) or get access to his laptop directly and override his controls. It will be a fun thing to try anyway, and if I can I'll let you know that the 6700 is capable of one more thing.
This PPC/Phone has been a great toy as well as tool.
