Porting number to Verizon, but keeping ATT Account??

Hey everyone...
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a question. I am looking into getting a Verizon phone and would like to port my number there. However, I am currently an ATT subscriber and would like to remain so since I would like to give the ATT phone to my dad in case he needs a phone. My question is can you port a number from a carrier but still keep the account? If so how do you do this? Any help would be greatly appropriated!! =)
