How to properly charge your battery?

I have heard that leaving any fully charged battery (cell phone, laptop, etc) on a charger for a long time makes the charge run out faster. Is this true? Because I have noticed that many devices that I use run out of charge way quicker than they did before when I first got them.

When I first got my Blackjack II, the charge was so good that it would have 3/4 blocks of charge left by the end of the day with heavy usage. But now, by the end of the day it would have 1/4 blocks of charge left. As mentioned before, I leave it on the charger overnight when i go to sleep. The situation with my laptop is the same. I almost always leave it on the charger, and now it barely lasts more than an hour without the charger. When I first got it, it would last more than a couple hours. Now, I just bought a new Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 phone. It cost me $800, and I don't want to make the same mistakes that I did with my other devices on such an expensive phone.

So my question is, what is the proper way to charge your batteries? Are you supposed to take it off the charger as soon as it finishes fully charging? Are my charging habits responsible for the decrease in how long my battery lasts, or does it not have anything to do with it and it's just time for a new battery every few months?

Some chargers auto shuts off and stops charging when the battery is full. I'm using Sony Ericsson W710i for more than 3 years now. Still having no Battery related problems.

ALWAYS charge battery to full when you buy a new one.
NEVER let your batter drain to zero. It damages the cells and decreases the life of your battery!
when you charge, always leave it charging until it is finished.

sorry forgot to mention, when it is finished charging it is best to remove it.

like laptops, if you leave it charging with battery in all the time, kills the battery life.

if you use ac adapter take out the battery in your laptop..

I am going to have to disagree on the charging issue. When the phone says "Charging is competed" that means it has stopped charging, so it does not hurt to leave it plugged in.

Myself (Audiovox 8600) I forgot about it, and the phone was not warm-like it is during and right after charging.
