NOT a stupid question... SE.com says 4GB max.... NOT TRUE
I was skeptical about the w580 before I got it, called SE and confirmed 8gb will work, but software will only show 4gb total for some reason.
Co-Worker had the w760, so I tried the 8gb stick in it and works like a champ. In my w760 with an 8gb M2 stick, I now have:
1033 music files (most full mp3 songs)
232 pictures
49 short videos (adding several full length movies tonight!)
170 themes
115 games
15 applications

with 3172MB (nearly 3.2GB) left free space on the 8gb card

You are free to get the 8gb stick (or anything lesser), my friend!

yea, i just popped an 8GB card in my W760 also... no problems, and the phone sees and reports all 8GB of it.

Does the 8gb chip slow the phone down? I read somewhere that it seemed to drag the phone response time down. Has anyone noticed that effect?

i haven't noticed any slowness after using the 8GB chip.. was it a branded W760 that reported the slowness?

I have no speed issues on my ATT Branded w760 with the 8gb card and co-worker just got 8gb card as well and loves it

Well, I have had my 8g memory for about 2 weeks now and I haven't noticed it being any slower.
I have lots of songs installed, several podcasts and some video podcasts and have downloaded a couple of tv shows even! This is a cool phone.

Sony Ericsson says the W760a can use up to a 4GB Memory Stick Micro(M2) card but the 16GB card works GREAT.

My Try:

Once the 16GB card was installed, the phone recognized it instantly and responded as follows:

Settings > General > Phone status > Select
Phone memory:
2.0 MB free
Memory card:
15247 MB free

My Stuff > All files > Options > Memory status > Select
Memory card

Free: 2.0 MB

TEST:

From Phone memory to Memory card:

During the test, there were no unusual blurps from the Sony Ericsson W760a phone and no noticeable degradation in phone speed from using the 16GB SanDisk memory card i.e. phone performance appeared to remain normal.

CONCLUSION: Yes, there is every reason to believe that the SanDisk 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB Memory Stick Micro(M2) cards will work in your W760a.

It has been commented on the Internet that these devices were designed to work with up to 32GB M2 cards, though this size has not been released yet.

If that is, in fact, a design limitation, then one would NOT expect the newest rumored chip size, SanDisk Memory Stick Micro 2TB (Yes, 2 terabytes!) to work in these devices.
