Selecting A Cell Phone For Teenaged Son

I have a son who would like a cell phone. He is only 13 years old, but apparently he is the last child on the face of this earth that doesn't have a cell phone. While I am certainly in no hurry to get him one, eventually he will get one. I have given it some thought and I am just wondering what factors people here have considered in selection. Do you simply go to whatever provider you currently have? Has anybody here had their child get a pre-pay? Given the expense and current lack of real need, I may, when the time is right, get something rugged like a used Casio G-Zone Boulder and help get him set up on Page Plus Cellular. I figure if he is in charge of buying his own airtime he can decide how important it is to spend his money on such things. I do know that as he does get older my wife would like the ability to reach him when he needs to get picked up from after school activities. We currently have Nextel, but that will not necessarily have a huge influence over what we select for him since we may be changing carriers anyway.

There are many teenagers out there which don't have a cellphone and honestly don't need one.

Unless you need one since your son is going clubbing every night and goes out until 2AM, any teenager doesn't need a cellphone. The health risks are too great. (And for goodness sakes, this is my opinion. Don't start with "There are no health risks" because there is, if you bothered doing your research there is health risks)

13 year olds text alot. You might consider a phone w/ a keyboard, like an env or something.
