Phone purchase...sick of iPhone 3G

I am sick of the iPhone so I am considering jumping to the bold or the Samsung Epix. I had the fuze and sold it because I dislike having to slide the phone to use the keypad and the onscreen keyboard sucks. I have certain needs:

* I need push email, contacts, calendar for my work, we use exchange but do not have BES so I would use BIS if I went with the bold.
* I like to use it for music and ocasionally a movie so I need a good all around smartphone with a good screen so I can see movies.

I would like your thoughts on which device to purchase. I am not up for an updgrade so I will pay full price and my self impossed limit is $700.00 I enjoy immediate gratification so I prefer not to purchase online.

Thanks.

If you are going to use BIS to access your company exchange account, you will be connecting via OWA and will only get your email in box (no sub-directories, contacts or calendars from the server). I would also consider the Treo Pro and the Nokia E71 although the Nokia exchange implementation is limited also from what I have read. You will find material on both here in the forum and there are a lot of reviews on the web. If your ultimate goal is to connect to your company's exchange server from what you wrote, I think you will need to stick with a WM device.

DO NOT GET A BLACKBERRY if your need exchange and their server doesn't have BES....you sure can get whatever else smartphone though....hmmm isn't that ironic.

Nokia E71!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For better multimedia, 5800 NAM (out end of this month), or an N96 if you don't mind lack of QWERTY. N96 has 16gb builtin + MicroSDHC slot.

Really ironic, blackberry made for email with limited email support. Anyone know if the epix has a decent resolution for movies? I would concider e71 but I heard the symbian os has limited applications for download compared to wm and doesn't play well with exchange.

Nah, i've used symbian (am using right now even) withe exchange, and i run exchange servers, works fine. Apps, depends on what you wanna do, could probably do it on s60, s60 is the world leading smartphone OS by the way.

How about the Palm Pro and the Ericsson Experia? What do you guys think in comparison to the samsung epic or e71?

I have had the E71 and currently have the Xperia.

The E71 is a great business phone, but the Xperia has great music/media (sounds great and I have no problem using my napster subscription with it), screen, and excellent connectivity in terms of email, etc.

I would say the X1, and if you have 1900mhz 3G in your area, you can get away with an X1i (I am in CHicago and our 3G is all 1900mhz in my area) - it's under your $700 price point.

I am really in between the E71, Xperia, and the Samsung Epix. Although more towards the E71 at this point, does anyone know if the E71 has HTML email with attachments or is it only text email?

Posted by: zephxiii

E71 can get attachments, html email is delivered via attachment and viewed in the web browser (fairly quick). Its not bad, with WM u gotta tell it to download pics, and or tap to scroll right, which seems to take a lil longer.

I am really considering the E71 and I will make my make my mind tomorrow when I go purchase it but had a couple last questions before about some mixed info I have searched. I here the E71 is great with exchange but then again I here in some forums that it does sync calendar email contacts and tasks. I was wondering if it indeed can sync exchange email, notes, calendar, tasks, and contacts. Can I view all my folders in the email as I have them in exchange and can I move emails to folders. Also I sometimes like to watch videos and was hoping if someone can tell me if the playback is good. Thanks to all who have helped.

I don't think it does notes via exchange, it should do it when u pc sync though.

E71 is freakn great though, and I've been through a number of them.

Is the video playback any good?

It functions, but it won't play back 720x480 at 30fps like the N95 does.

If you're talking internet video, it works fine for anything realplayer can play or that will play with whatever version of flash lite it has. You can download a youtube app if that's your thing.

BTW, if Mail for Exchange doesn't do everything you need, you may want to check out RoadSync or some of the other third party email software.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia E71-2: Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13337/608; U; en) Presto/2.2.0)

Exchange syncs all mail contacts and calendar. Don't use notes so not sure about that.

I just picked up a Palm pro and so far I can't really complain about anything.

Surprisingly good call quality, awesome speakerphone, and exceptional battery life even while using push email.
