MAYDAY!!

My wife asked me to add revellie to her phone to use when waking up her Girl Scouts on sleep overs. I loaded a bunch of ringtones to her card in the 'Ringers' folder using Bitpim and did a pull from the phone with Bitpim and then wrote the data back.

The ringtones work for the most part. But, the phone is restarting when a call comes in using some of the ringtones. I figured it had become confused as to where the ringtones were. I went into the ringers folder on the phone itself and deleted them then pulled and pushed the data again. Now the ringers are listed in the phones directory with a value of 0.00kb, though a couple are holding on to their sizes.

I hunted for an answer in the forum without success. I am assuming the restarts are caused by the phone being confused as to where the assigned ringtone is. What is the fix?

Best practice is to not use the memory card for ringtones. Just go ahead an drop the ringers themselves either in the ringers tab in Bitpim or directly in the appropriate directory on the phone.

Also, make sure you have the most recent version of Bitpim.

You think that I should move all the ringtones into the ringers folder on the phone and see if that helps?

I've had ringtones on the card on my 8300 for years without issue.

The version of Bitpim I used was 1.0.6 when I put them on her phone, but since it seems to want to dial every number known to man while it does transfers, and then cause the phone to reboot before it's done, I switched back to 1.0.2 for the 8300s.

The technique I used was to load the tones to the card with a reader and then read the phone with Bitpim and write it back to the phone. Is there an issue with the technique?

Well, that's the way you're supposed to do it... it's just that I've seen several folks who had troubles with it. It could be the file name contains characters the phone doesn't like, it could also be that the file is too big, or maybe some problem with the way Bitpim is writing the directory, or one of a million other problems.

I just never could see why you needed that many ringers (since 10-15 or so would fit just fine on the phone if trimmed right).. but to each their own. Gotta keep mamma happy, right?

I'm not saying it doesn't work, or that it can't be done, but it seems as if it's running into problems... so the simplest, most reliable way is to actually store them on the phone.

As far as the dialing, in the newer firmware revisions of the 8300 you could get the old "directory locked..." message in Bitpim with older versions.. so it would dial a sequence of numbers that I guess help it get around that. My 8100 does that with the latest version of Bitpim, where it never did that in older versions. Doesn't seem to hurt it any, since it still works just fine.

But yeah, your technique is right as far as I know, but many folks I've seen complaining about it lead me to believe it's not as reliable as just putting them on the phone directly.
