Hi,
I have verizon and can't afford anything extra as every app must be paid for monthly. I would love to have google maps and be able check email and look for a restaurant on my phone.
Do I need to just cave and get an iPhone?
Any more affordable options?
Thanks in advance for advice on this matter.

A BlackBerry will do that for you, but with Verizon, you will need to add the $29.99 data plan on.

Yes, but will I have to dl separate apps that I will have to pay even extra for (on top of that 29.99)?

No. Although I think Verizon disables GPS for Google Maps. If they do, then for GPS navigation you would need to pay.

A Windows Mobile phone will also allow you to install applications without paying a monthly fee for them. Same goes for Android/iPhone/Palm.

Google maps doesn't use GPS, it triangulates cell tower signals. Verizon won't even let me DL Google maps, although if I did, the OS on my phone probably couldn't run it. It really angers me.

If your carrier doesn't lock down GPS to get $10 out of you a month, Google Maps uses GPS satellites for a more accurate location. Verizon is pretty well known for locking down their phones; I remember in the past (I don't know they still do), you couldn't transfer ring tones over Bluetooth, so you'd buy ringtones from them.

However, getting a smartphone is a good way to be able to download all the programs you want without worrying about paying extra (unless the app costs money).

I bought a used Pharos GPS Phone 600 and installed Garmin Mobile XT on it and it works great. There is no monthly fee since this works directly from the satellites. I haven't configured for e-mail, but I suppose I could since it has wifi.

If you want the Verizon network, perhaps you could get a CDMA smartphone and use the Verizon network through Page Plus Cellular.
