Is the S40 a piece of junk?

Hey all,

I currently own a P280 on the VS network. It has a lot of software problems (like erasing my phonebook all the time). I like the look and the features of the S40 but have read lots of reports about its poor software and reception.

There seems to be lots of conflict on this. Would you please recommend whether I should switch from the P280 to an S40, or would that be a downgrade?

What about the reception...is it as bad as people report?

please do not post a reply unless you have direct experience with one or both of these phones.

thanks, jason

the p280 has excellent reception and quality. the s40 has a lot of style and some other neat stuff. i own both and they work great for me. make sure you get the latest software for both.

I also own both phones and I find that the majority of the time I use my S40. Yes the reception isn't as good as the 280 but both of them have their own little quirks.

The S40 is a sleeker phone with some nice features, the 280 feels and looks cheaper. I think the audio quality of the phones are pretty close to equal with the 280 having only a slight edge because of it's ability to hold on to the signal longer.

Other negatives of the S40 are No GPRS, and sometimes the phone will hang when making entries to the phone book or backing out of secondary menus. The 280's software is crappy. I haven't flashed mine but other that have it has made very little difference.

Bottom line they are both decent GSM phones if you don't care about GPRS my advise would be get the Seimens.

i too own an s40 - haven't had any real problems with it except for the occasional hang which i can pretty much live with. reception is good and i think mine hangs on to a signal quite well. go get one.

If it hangs a lot you should check your SW Version and call customer care to set up a version upgrade.

** If you have Cingular you are required to run version 3.1.0.

i'm with voicestream and have v.3.2.0 of the software. the hang is rare - maybe it's just me pressing the keys too fast. hehehe...

Yes S40 is a piece of junk. Some people will not admit it cause they own it. Well according to Howard and Steve, S40 is really the worst phone in the tri band GSM catagory

I disagree the s40 is not a piece of junke, it's a great phone with ton of feat, the menu might suck a little but beside that I don't have any complains. RF is no bad
Tell me a better world phone that you can get for less the 200 bucks unlocked with wap

Not to forget the really perfect audio quality and excellent SAR values. And 4 down/1 up HSCSD, even over IR (eat this, Nokia!).

S40 is not a piece of junk but it is getting there cos Siemens refuse to develop follow-up models based on the S40 design but with enhanced features like what Ericsson and Nokia are doing for their new models. I have been a S40 owner for nine months but gave mine away to a relative over Christmas. I am in no hurry to buy my next phone cos there is going to be a mind-boggling no. of choices available this year.....
