howcome the ringer still goes off if i put the phone into quiet mode?

go to the quiet mode menu, there is a ring volume submenu. just go into it and adjust the ring volume to 0.
then u will have the quiet mode quiet

i thought that the ring adjust inn the quiet menu was the same as the other ring adjusts...
