5310 Keypad Troubles

I'm repairing a Nokia 5310 for a friend, and I've narrowed down what seems to be causing it, but I can't even fathom why it's happening. The problem is that when the phone is fully assembled the 4, 5, and 6 buttons do not work. However, when the faceplate [flimsy surround with 3 media buttons] is removed, or even just pried up a fraction of a millimeter with a fingernail, the buttons work perfectly.

If anyone has any suggestions, or can direct me with some further diagnostic I would be most appreciative.

I've been following the guide below to disassemble the phone [I had thought the keypad/screen cover needed replacing] which has decent images, but I've got a decent macro lens in case a detail shot is necessary.

Sorry to bump the topic, but I haven't had any luck finding another soultion out there in the wilds of the internets. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Just to note, as I seem to have left it out of the original message, I have fully disassembled the phone and checked the connector from the keypad to the mainboard to be sure nothing is gumming up the connection. I found that everything was working fine and in the process of reassembling/testing the phone [ie. put one piece back, test, another piece, test, etc] it was only after putting on the outer faceplate surround that the problem with the keypad reappeared.

TIA

Anyone have any idea about this? I'm thinking about buying one on ebay that has a similar problem and just replacing the keypad or flex membrane underneath but I don't know for sure that either of those is the problem. And obviously I don't want to waste my money on something I can't fix.
