Ugh, did this happen to your 8100?

I know I might be a bit anal but here goes. Did anyone of you have the black cover/plug on top of the "Back" key fall off? I've only had the phone for 10 days and this morning, I noticed that piece had disappeared.

Attached is a picture of what I am talking about. Do you guys think I can take this phone back and exchange it?

Thanks

Are you sure there is no transparent plastic in there?

Nope. I am pretty sure that round plastic piece has fallen off. It's now exposed with some rubber, screw like device.

I thought the same thing when I first got my 8100 it's supposed to be like that. There is a notch on the bottem of the top part of the main display that fits into the hole I think this shuts the main display off.

yep i got the same thing

screen purpose ( to turn off your screen )
and/or
just to end your phone call ( same as closing your phone )

I just looked at mine and it appears the same way: no cover over the "nubbin" that gets poked to tell the phone it is closed.

Now, I do not remember seeing that exposed previously, but I sure cannot remember what was there before though.

Anyone do anything about this yet (exchange it, get it repaired)?

I think that's just how it's supposed to be.

I picked up a 8100 yesterday, have had it less than 24 hours and I have nothing covering that area. It looks like the other people posted. Open so the little "nub" can go in there when the flip is closed.

definitely supposed to be that way. there was never any black thing covering it.

Definitely makes sense the more I think about it. I guess I didn't pay attention to it closely enough before. So the picture I got from the Sanyo site just doesn't have the right angle to show the nubin thing.

Thanks again for all the responses.

There is a radio shack on my way to work tomorrow. I'll stop in and check and confirm this for everyone. I was looking at my old phone, Startac 7867, it had the same open/close features as the Sanyo except it didn't need this nubbin thing. I guess older phone were better designed/made.

No need to confirm it, that’s what it’s defiantly for, just take a paper clip or something and push it down, the screen will shut off.

Finally got to Radio Shack this morning. The phone they had on display had a silver cap over the nubbin. Plus the indentation is deep enough where the peg does not come into contact with the silver cap. I took a picture of it with my phone but unfortunately I don't have Vision Service yet.

My phone is probably a different version than the one that I saw. I am going to go to Sprint store to see if I can exchange this phone.

I will post an update once I make it to the Sprint store.

that doesn't make sense. was it a working 8100 or a demo shell? the demo phones probably have a silver thing instead of the nub because they are non-working phones.

If you check the picture on the SPCS site you will note that there is NO silver plug.

Yes, definately go to the Sprint store and explain why you want to exchange your "defective" phone! ROTFLMAO

Who knows, perhaps they will be willing to humor you and exchange it for a dummy phone with the silver cover...

jamesjoe: you are such a funny guy, you are my hero.

For the rest of the guys, I admit to my mistake. I went to the Sprint store and saw that indeed all the 8100 model had that same design. I guess I was just surprised to find a hole in the phone and wanted to make sure it was supposed to be that way. Thanks for all the responses.

That hole is for the switch that is activated by the little nipple on the display side of the tele when it is flipped closed. Motorola uses a magnetic reed switch so ther is no opening for dirt and water to egress into, I don;t know what Sanyo chose such a cheap way of doing this!

Juts look above, right below the right side of the display and you will see the nipple that pushes on the switch when you close the tele.

Petey00, I just found your unwillingness to accept the obvious to the point of going to 2 different stores funny

============================================

I just wish the hole in the 8100 for the switch was the only hole in the phone. The REAL hole is in the crappy design. You only get what you pay for. I have now tested 2 in a row and both stink. The receiver is deaf and the digital opperation like web stuff and picture mail is brain dead.

You get what you pay for, or more accurately, don't get what you don't pay for.

I have repaired commercial radio gear and seen the inside of most consumer electronics and Sanyo is the lowest end of the business. I have no doubt that their low quality and lousy design carries over to their cellualr products.

After now experimenting with two 8100 and a Samsun AH460 on the Sprint service I have no doubt that Sanyo still makes crap. The A460 blows the 8100 away on reception quality and dropping calls. The only thing good about the 8100 is how it looks, its pretty ringers, nice display and shutting it off.

How can you tell you are going to have trouble with your 8100?

Just see if it is turned on!

The only time this phone does what you expect it to do is when it is off. Then you expect it to do nothing, that it does very well!

I hope that sooner than later Sprint gets Motorolas to make some nce flip phones for them with web and cam capabilites.

Sanyo, especially the 8100, is junk and in my opinion the product is a fraud. It does nothing well, except play pretty melodies.

I will stick with the phone and hope they find a way to fix this pice of trash in a few months.

I recommend that people steer clear of this lemon. It is nice to see a cam/web phone for such a low price and in a few years we will be able to get a phone with all these features for this price that actually works, but that is NOT the case at this time.

Sanyo TV's, Toaster Ovens, Microwaves, Air Conditioners, Bread Makers, Radios and all their other stuff sucks so why should their cell phones be any better?

The Samsung a460 is the worst cell phone I have EVER used. It spent more time searching for service than it did actually holding onto a signal.

That and if you used the phone for 5+ minutes, it'd burn your hand to a crisp
