SL55, GPRS & Battery Life

I've got a question for you all. On my SL55, I can turn off GPRS altogether or leave it on. When left on, it looks like this: |GPRS| (which the manual says means "GPRS registered").

If I turn GPRS off, it will not even use GPRS when it needs to (such as downloading a MMS). I have to contantly turn it on and turn it off. I've been doing this because I thought that it might affect battery life to leave it registered on GPRS all the time. does it?

This seems like a major design flaw.

you will save battery life if you leave gprs off.

Right, that's what I figured. So there is no way to set the phone to access GPRS "as needed"? With it off, whenever I get a MMS, the phone tells me that my setting are wrong. Very frustrating. Nokia's seem to be able to access GPRS as needed.

As for reducing the battery, by how much? It's not like bluetooth or anything...
