Pics off 8100 w/o Vision

I'm a newbie to this forum. I had a Samsung 8500 phone for 3 years but it Failed the Sprint store test but (in one smart move I actually made) I had the Best Buy Extended warranty and paid an extra $20 to pick up a Sanyo 8100 phone. (BTW - My feeling is the Sprint network changed and orphaned my phone instead of my phone actually being bad - everything worked on it, just reception suddenly became awful). I decided on the Sany 8100 because of the "cool factor" of the camera. But, I do not (at this time) want to buy a Vision package. So, I emailed Sanyo Cust Service to ask if you could upload pictures off of the 8100 straight to my PC Without using Vision. (I have seen this question in the Forum before). Here is my Response back:

At 06/06/2003 11:25 AM we wrote - Thanks for your inquiry.

You are able to transfer the photos from the 8100 to your PC using the the USB data cable and Snap Media software. You can purchase both from sanyo.com or futuredial.com. If you want to email the pictures to friends and relatives, please consulate Sprint about Vision. You may not be able to email without the Vision plan.

Thank you,

I am thinking Great if this is true. I have Not purchased the cable of Snap Media software yet - but am wondering, has anyone else been able to actually do this? IE, is what Sanyo telling me actually True?

One last issue - I Do have the old Sprint "wireless web" option on my current service plan. But it appears that the 8100 will Only do Vision?? Is there a way to "dumb down" the 8100 - or do I need to eat the cost of Vision, or use another phone for "wireless web"?

(Thanks for wading through my rambling!)

Be careful. I'm pretty sure that Sanyo tech was mistaken.

It is my understanding that SnapMedia can only transfer pictures (and ringers) to a phone, not from it. I don't think there is any way to get pictures (that you have taken with the built-in camera) off of the 8100 or 5300 other than to transfer them to your online pictures account through Vision.

Thanks for the warning - that's what I was hoping to hear. The news from the Sanyo Tech seemed too good to be true (based on other posts) - I was waiting for a success story before plunking down my cash. Thanks again!

It makes sense from a business standpoint to only be able to pull pictures via the Vision package, but from a PR standpoint, its too bad if you cannot.
