Vaja case for P800 - pictures and first impressions

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: dupasquier

I received today my Vaja case 18 days (including week ends) after ordering at www.vajacases.com which is pretty much what Vaja Cases claims on it's website (15 days delivery).

I ordered a custom built case (with ultra clip) which enable you to choose from more than 20 colors combinations and to have your name written on the back (I didn't choose that option).

The case is ultra light and it's leather isn't flexible at all. It is pretty tight around the P800 so the phone can't possibly slip out of it's case.

The Vaja case is very well designed which enables it's user to access every function of the P800 without having to pull out the P800 of it's case.

Full access to the jog dial, power button, infrared eye and Stereo Headset hole on one side:

And full access to the stylus and MS Duo on the other side. The camera and internet buttons are covered but Vaja cleverly built it's case so you can use those buttons through the leather as shown on the picture below:

The back of the case with the ultra clip (you can notice that the loudspeaker grille next to the camera lens is also uncovered).

The ultra clip seems to be very reliable, can be clipped anywhere on your clothes (not only at the belt like most cases) and the case is very easy to clip and unclip.

For bluetooth headset users, the Vaja case doesn't cause the sound to "garble" at either end of a phone conversation

Great photos Dupasquire!! A new camera convert....glad to see you got it working and the case looks GREAT!! Just wished I carried it without the flip, but a beautiful solution for those who do....

Thanks Mark.
It is a very nice looking case indeed. Excellent leather quality.
So far, I really like this case.

Have you changed your mind now?

dupasquier,

In one of you profile shots, Do you have a modified stylus clipped to your P800???

I assume it gives you easier access to the memory stick duo.

Do you think the modification significantly effected the strength or durability of the stylus?

How did you modify it?

Thanks.
Bill

I dont think it's modded....thats how the stylus looks when you have a white MS Duo.....It is clear you know.

BTW nice case

Nice case Dupasquier!! I've been waiting for this one...I have the I-Volution for my T68i & really like it.

I'm interested in the Catrina Black & red combo---however I have been waiting to see if this is the color offered for the "classic". The picture display on the web site shows this color combo....I'd hate to pay $100 only to find out this color will be $88 when available.

This is the original stylus.

One more thing I forgot to mention, it isn't possible to use the charging cradle with the case. You will need to remove the phone from it's case to charge and syncronize through the cradle.

Yes, I suppose I have. These photos show the case not to be as bulky and plastic looking as the Vaja photos. I think it looks very nice, but I still wouldn't use it because of the flip issue.

Wow....that s###s-- I leave my P800 sitting on the charge cradle all day at work.

PMI, but ...

1. Do you buy this from Vaja directly, or are there resellers with better prices?

2. Per the Vaja website, Vaja P800 Case without belt clip and with ultra clip are "coming soon." Since some of you have bought this already, which option did you buy?

3. I realize you have to have the keypad off for the case to work, but will the case work with a screen protector (I've posted separately asking for screen protector recommendations).

Sorry for the several and simple questions, but as I tell my students, the only stupid questions are the ones not asked.

1. I would recommend you to go to Vaja cases directly. The price is about the same everywhere and the customer service at Vaja is excellent!

2. Customized case 15 days delivery

3.The case will work with a screen protector (Brando or Martin Fields)

Thanks dupasquier

I'm still a relative newbie so could you give me a link to the Brando and Martin Fields screen protectors as I have not heard of them before. Also, do you have a recommendation between them. Thanks again!

You are welcome.

Martin Field @ http://www.p800er.com/ and Brando @ http://gsm.virtualdynamix.com/index.asp

Thanks. Any recommendation between them, or the PPC Techs WriteShield (not sure if last one will work with the Vaja case)?

I realized yesterday that the Vaja case fully covers the area where the mic is...
After testing, it doesn't have any influence and the receiver will hear you as well with or without the case.

I wanna ask something about this case. Can you put the phone on the sync station with the case? or have to take put the case?

thanks

No...
I tried both sync stations, the CDS-11 and the one I received with my P800 and you have to take the phone out of it's case...

So far it is the only negative point I found about this case after using it for a few days. Not really a big deal as it is very easy to take the phone out of it's case and plug it on the cradle.

This is when bluetooth comes to the rescue. Just buy an adaptor for the pc or mac, you should not have to take the phone in and out of the case all the time.

Good suggestion. What adapter would you recommend?

I have a 3com PCMCIA XJACK antenna Bluetooth card in the mail... I don't like the usb solutions because for a laptop, you will always have to take it out. and with the XJACK, the BT antenna can stay inside the PC card when not in use.

I got hawking technology bluetooth adapter from Amazon for around $30. It's the USB one. It took me about 15 minutes to set it up - installing software and make the synch work. I didn't read the manual - so it might be faster if you do.

So far - it crashed couple times - I am using windows 2000 on my laptop. Other than that - I can synch and send file fine.

I don't feel the softwre/driver comes with it is very stable - at least for windows.

But hey, for $30 - it's ok.

Vaja case has a new case just came out today (I think - I checked yesterday and it wasn't there yet).

It doens't look that much different with the other one - the new one is withouth the fancy stuff and cost $10 less. It's still only available for custom order.

what about those odd people who want:
1. protection from the screen from the elements (rain, dust, etc.).

2. People who want to use their flip...

This is a really cool case, but I hope they make a version of it that's more closed and offers real protection for the screen.

As we all know, a screen protector is not enough, and dust can get under the screen!

Got the Vaja case fairly quickly (1 week) after ordering it. Nicely made, fits like a glove (tight like OJ's in the trial). It does seem to provide protection without unduly adding to the size of the phone.

True, the synch station does not work with the case on, not does the data cable. However, the power cable does plug in, and I can use BT for synching, so I can charge and synch with the case on.

Of course, the flip does have to be off. Even with a BT headset and voice control, it isn't that easy to use the P800 as a phone with the flip off, especially in a car, where as a safety matter I often just have to pull off to the side of the road. I guess you can't have it all.

Guys with Vaja case, can you carry it horizontally, or only vertically as I really like the case and I wanna get one.

Thanks

No you have to carry vertically. I've had my Vaja case now for ~ 1 month & I really like it. I had been using the Krussel--but I found the plastic annoying. I found myself unsnapping and opening to allow direct access to the screen. Now I just use the Brando screen protectors.
