Biggest Gripe about p800?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Okay I am thinking about buying a p800 as T-Mobile offers unlimited GPRS add-on for 19.99 a month, and would love to use it to surf the web, and for Email, email is the main application.

Those of you that have owned the p800 what is your biggest gripe with it? I had a T68i and the reception was horrible, I know others say the p800 is better but how much better? I am using a Motorola v60g and it works great, I get service where I need it, and it hangs onto calls in fringe areas.

How will the p800 compair?
How is the email app? Ability to leave pop3 messages on server?
How is handwriting recognition?
How is Syncing with a Mac? iSync looks like it works now, would be nice to just dump all my vCards at once.

Are there good cases for it? And screen protectors? (Krusell Case?)

I cant think of anything else, it is just tough to go back to Sony Ericsson after my T68i, dont get me wrong the T68i had lots of features, but it had crappy recption, slow menus, slow bootup, and took forever to load my phone book.

Someone convince me. The 3650 isnt my bag, Siemens SX-1 looks awesome but who knows when that will be out.

Is this true?!? I thought the unlimited for $19.95 was for the Sidekick only. Can I get it for my P800?!? If so, tell me how, when, where to sign up!
Also, couldn't someone write a program for the P800 to use the Sidekick proxy & allow us to use the unlimited data plan? (just a thought)

Its not just the proxy, but the data isnt converted to HTML until it actually hits the sidekick, it is still in optimized format before it hits the device. The simple way to think of it is that the data is sent in .zip format, then when the device recieves it it unpacks it.

Unlimited GPRS data starts on T-Mobile tomorrow. Contact customer care. Yes it is unlimited GPRS for 19.99, not the sidekick add-on but GPRS!##!#!

answers to questions:
1. i have found that the v60g does hold on a little bit better in fringe areas, but not enough to justify not using my p800 exclusivly.
2. E-mail app is pretty darn good, and yes you have the optiosn to leave the messages on the server
3. Still figuring out handwriting..... cant get the capatilization right and can't get the phoen to recoginze numbers properly, like i try to write the number 1 but i get the letter L, and cannot get the handwriting software to recignize the back slash /... but all in all it does a solid job, faster than the keyboard or mult-tap
4. Don't know don't use mac.

All in all i would say that i LOVE my p800 it works great and does a lot of things really well, defiantly recommend it over the v60g, if i coudl just master handwriting recognition..... oh well, maybe Mark would like to chime in on that one

peace

The stylus. It sucks and gets lost.

The people who are content with their 3390s and various Nokia junkers (aka...stupid people) always tell me that the P800 is too big but considering I don't have to carry a PDA around, the size is great.

iSyncing the P800 is working fine for me, with the new version of iSync. [A few people report some troubles, I had none at all.] It even syncs contact pictures! But currently it only works for the contacts. Apple promises sync for calendar and ToDo is coming soon.

You can ship vCards back and forth too, if you want to go that route. You can make a group vCard from your address book and send that to the P800 and it will load in all the contacts.

There is still more to be done on Mac-P800 integration. The cool tricks the Address Book can do over Bluetooth with dialing and SMS don't work yet. But you can easily send all sorts of files back and forth just fine with Mac's included BlueTooth File Exchange Utility - pictures, sounds, programs, whatever. And of course using the P800 as the modem for a laptop Mac over Bluetooth works great.

I believe Apple is going to integrate the P800 fully quite quickly. I have a feeling there are a lot of P800s around the Apple campus...

I wish I could drop my PC altogether, but it's currently the only way to do a full backup and restore. Third party opportunity here!

I think the P800 is a superior phone, but it has some really annoying interface gltiches. For instance:

1) The alarm (ie, to wake up or for meetings) plays through the wired headset if it's connected. End result? You can't hear the alarm if you have your headset attached, but not in your ears. Dumb dumb dumb. I can't get over how the designers dropped the ball on this one.

1.5) If you have the wired headset attached, the phones ring tones are also not as loud as they should be (I think this is the case....it's been a while since I fretted about this one).

2) On the flip slide, when the wired headset is connected, the P800 plays numeric key tones loudly through the phone's internal speaker, so if you're trying to dial with the headset attached, everyone around you can hear you thumbing the keypad. Again, this is just plain STUPID. If the headset is plugged in, you should hear the numeric tones through the headset.

3) Usually once a day (maybe once every two days if I'm lucky), I have to turn the phone off and on again to get a working GPRS connection. Otherwise, the P800 just doesn't connect to the net.

4) It's VERY lame that when someone sends you a link in an email, clicking the link automatically brings up the default Browser, which is a lame browser. Knowing full well that there were better browsers for the P800 coming, the engineers should have allowed you the option of CHOOSING which browser you want to open the link in.

5) While this is less of an issue, the email app doesn't have any kind of junk mail filter. In this day and age, a filter is becoming a required item!

6) I truly wish the P800 would display an icon of how many voice mail messages you have waiting, or that you have voice mail waiting at all. Having voice mail notifications through SMS messages is lame. You end up being confused as to whether you still have unheard voice mails in your mail box. Or you don't get to them for a while. I think this might be a Tmobile issue, but it sucks nonetheless.

Is anyone using a P800 on T-Mobile in the SF Bay Area, and if so how is your RF reception. Especially North Beach, Russian Hill and Noe Valley. Wondering if the unlimited data will be usable...

I am in SF & the reception is very good, better than my V60, less dropped calls.

Excellent. So 1 Big vCard with like all 150 people in my Address Book can be transfered at once and the p800 will be able to understand it, and it will load mobiles, home, work, email...etc?

That was one of my gripes about the 3650, each vCard would have to be sent at once, which as you can see becomes a pain when you have 150 contacts. SMS feature, and voice gateway in Addressbook.app are nice, I am sure Apple is working on it, the SMS feature was the one I used the most. I can almost smell my p800, now all I have to do is save some cash. How much internal memory does it have without a memory stick in it??

That's how I did it. The P800 does accept the group vCard and gives you a little alert something like "Do you want to add 123 contacts to the address book?" and when you OK it they all go in. Smooth.

Of course now with iSync able to sync the contacts, I'd just use iSync. Need Bluetooth on your Mac for that though.
