Question about Termination Fee

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If I cancel, less than 1 year into my plan, do I have to pay any equipment fee in addition to the $175 early termination fee? I bought the LG Dare and not sure if they would charge me $xx + the term fee.
Easier to ask here than call and stir the pot.

other than etf, if one should cancel at a date othe than the exact cycle end date, is the last month pro rated, or does vzw charge for the entire last month?

the latter

basically all disconnects take effect on the last day of your billing cycle.

so yes, it is most cost effective to cancel your service or port out exactly on your bill cycle date

Don't forget that in most circumstances today your ETF would also be a partial one (since it'd be decreasing at $5/month for every month you've actually completed in the contract), so it'd be less than $175. The only time you'd have to pay for the full equipment price is basically if you wanted to keep the equipment and didn't pay the ETF (this generally applies in the first 30 days of getting the equipment and starting the contract).

Thanks for the info.

so for the early termination fee you would have to return your phone?

A bit late, but if you pay the ETF you keep your phone (you can only return your phone and not pay the ETF if you are within the first 30 days of purchasing it).

If I am understanding correctly,

Why would you ever pay full retail for a phone that cost more than 2-year promotional price + 175 ETF?

If a phone cost 500 dollars retail, but the promotional price was 200 dollars, why can't you sign up for a new #, pay the promotional price and the ETF which all adds up to 375.

Can someone explain this?

Sure, you can do that.

I asked AT&T about this a few days ago when I switched to Verizon. AT&T said pro-rating the ETF only applied if I had a contract date after June 28, so...I'm screwed for the full $175.

You asked AT&T about their ETF or about VZW's ETF? If AT&T's, then I'm not sure given that this is basically about VZW, but if it's about VZW's, then the pro-rated/partial ETF would apply to any contracts that were started since late 2007 I think, if not 2006.

If you port out within the first 30 days but keep the phone, do they still only charge the ETF or would they charge full retail price for the phone in this scenario?

They should only charge the ETF.
