Garage Speaker System

So I want to put some speakers in my garage for when working on the truck or working out. Right now I just have a simple 2.1 computer speakers setup on my workbench that I plug my iPod into. Their decent, but not really loud enough for me when I'm working on the driveway. I want something a little more permanent. Just not exactly sure what direction I should go in.

I'm trying to stay within the ~$100 range.

Not sure if I should be looking at used PA systems, home audio systems or other types out there.

I plan on putting the head-unit (or whatever they call it) into a cabinet, then place the speakers on opposite sides of the garage while running the wires through the crawl-space above it.

Not sure if this matters, but being in Arizona, I'm probably going to need something durable as I'm sure the temp will reach around 100 degrees during summer. Any suggestions?

I also have one of those "boom-boxes" that are sold in target and have the two big speakers that I guess i could just get longer cables for, but was hoping for something with a little more bass.

What do you audiophiles suggest?

ps, I hate my neighbors, so the louder and bassier sound I can get for my money, the better.
