I was wondering if anyone has the directions for unlocking a Nextel phone for use in Colombia, South America. The name of the "Nextel" system in colombia is Avantel. They use all the same phones and I think Nextel Actually has their hands into it. If anyone could let me know i would be grateful thanks.

I think that they use the same phones, but I'm pretty sure that they do use a different fequency than our iDEN phones on Nextel here. So, if that is correct, then our phones couldn't be used on their system. (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong)

Maybe you can add a bandmap for Avantel in RSS?

nextel might use them as a intl. roamer, but as GSM, i would check out the nextel site and look at international coverage to double check

It's the same as the Nextel System...

800MHz iDEN..

1. Unlock the phone, removing subsidy lock...
2. Apply the appropriate avantel CSD
3. Set bandmap for Avantel
4. Change interleave if necessary.

Those are the basic steps... More changes here and there may be necessary, but that's basically it.

I WAS IN CARTAGENA COLOMBIA recently.
I went to the Avantel office, they put in their sim card ( you can activate with pepaid phone cards ( pay as you go ) ) However it said "enter special code" upon turning on the phone ( which showed full service bars ) I think this was due to the fact my i305 was locked to TELUS as I bought it in Canada for use on TELUS there. If I had the phone simply unlocked by rewriting the codeplug ( with RSS ) as in getting rid of the subsidy lock, surely this would be all that is required ??? I have posed this question on Underground File Network to see if I can get this worked out before I go to Colombia again. any thoughts ??
