VPN'ing with P800

The T-Mobile Unlimited GPRS add on has 2 options, internet2 for non-VPN, internet3 for VPN.

While I may be 1 step away from asking customers if they want to supersize their fries, right now I administer a network. Hence my interest in VPN.

Is anyone using VPN with their P800? And if so, for what purpose, and what 3rd party apps, if any, are you using in conjunction with the VPN activity?

I have seen somewhere APPgate. But my guess is you need also the APPGATE VPN server for it. ( my-symbian.com/uiq/applications/category.php?fldAuto=6 )

Didn't spo yet other clients like NORTEL etc. Would be very sweet if those will be available. This would also for me very useful when I get my P800.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.

On my-symbian.com I noticed a few apps that permit you to remote control a computer over a GPRS connection, so you could reboot a server, etc. Anyone tried any of these apps?

VNC client is available for the P800.

VPN will enable you to access you company (or home) network on a secure way.

Having this VPN client on the P800 would make life easier for a lot of people (and they are not even aware of it!)

I hope some programmer reads it, and will build a VPN client, ipsec, with a lot of encyption on it... so I can admin my network from the road... or while snowboarding in Whistler (no joke, they already got me 3 times!!)

Thanks for everyone's input. I've done some further research and see 3 possible ways to go:

1. VNC

2. VNC Viewer

3. Remote Control

Not sure about the difference between 1 and 2. Both are freeware based on VNC. 3 costs $$ but promises to be an enhanced version of VNC.

Anyone had experience with any of these? Basically I need sometimes to remotely reboot an NT or 2000 server, log in, and start a couple of apps.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I'm pretty sure 1 & 2 are the same thing, and since they're free give them a try, if you don't like it then move to Remote Control. I haven't tried VNC on the phone yet but I use it all the time on all my other computers.

The only difference I can see that Remote Control has is an option to 'shrink' the screenand display a smaller snapshot that fits in the display of the P800... perhaps you can write to the VNC J2ME developers and request that feature as well =)

Thanks Dan. What you say makes perfect sense. I will give this a try.

I have the T-Mobile all you can eat data plan. One issue was whether to use internet2 (non-VPN) or internet3 (VPN). Do you know if it matters in this context?

Movian also makes a VPN client for Symbian. Not sure whether or not it will work on the P800. I tried it on the 3650 and it didn't.

In any case it will work with Nortel's VPN side using SecurID authentication (I had it on my Pocket PC). There are other options too

I will investigate the movian client. I don't have my P800 as of yet, but will be picking it up this afternoon (if still in stock otherwise I will be B & C all weekend... ) and if I can get a link to the software test it ASAP. )

Want to try want to try...
