Confused - using phone as a modem

I've read through numerous threads on here about using phones as a modem, but I'm confused.

I know there's the $60 Broadband Access or $2/day

I also know there's the VPak for $15 (some $30?)

What are the differences in the two? The VPak is only to access mobile web and such on your phone (not having it connected to computer via USB or BT?)...and the $60 is the USB aircard thingy that you can use in laptop?

I'm just confused on this. For phones that can be used as a modem, you aren't allowed to use it as a modem for the $15 VPak price?

How do you get the $2/day access for just when you need it and on that can you use your phone as a modem?

Also, somewhere on here I had read about if you have a dial-up ISP and your phone is capable of being used as a modem, you can do that instead of through VZW? Is that true? I have a back-up dial-up account through my DSL provider....something like 20 hours/mth or so. Can that be done on occasion when I'm away from home and need to get on the laptop...only using the phone as a modem to dial in to my ISP's network? Would that charge for data or voice or both through my phone?

Thanks for any clarification.

BTW...I have the Chocolate 3.

As I recall, with the VPAK, your data-usage "burns" minutes, with the $60 package, minutes aren't the issue, but you still have Gb limits.

if your looking to teether, no matter what phone you have your total charges of data packages and features required to teether will total 59.99 a month. The Vpak allows you to use the web and vcast music and video's, Data usage only uses minutes if you are on an old americas choice plan. If you are on a nationwide plan you will be charged 1.99/MB. If you have the VPak its going to end up being 59.99 a month no matter how you slice it. There is not way to use your phone as a modem unless you have the teethering feature added to your account.

Is it possible to tether using a separate dial-up account (rather than #777) without the BBA? My university has a modem pool, and I'd like to be able to connect to that if/when I need it. I've been trying to get it to work over Bluetooth, but no luck.
