Tethering XV6800

Okay, been curious how to pull this off for a while. I did a quick search on the site to find this:

and while that's all fine it's only for the XV6700. I fault on step one because of that. Is there anything special I have to do otherwise?
Long question: Attempting to get my cell phone to act as a modem without shelling another $15/month for it.
