These steps will change your Nokia 6301b from T-mobile USA market to an unbranded Nokia phone (the startup logo will change).

This is my contribution to the forum for all the help I found here.
Message on phone: when running Java "Application access set to not allowed"

You use this document at your own risk. I am not sure if what I found out is 100% correct, but I did spent many hours figuring this out and I am frustrated by the commercial behavior of those big money milking companies.
When I bought the Nokia 6301b phone T-Mobile said that Java will work on it, but they “forgot” to mention that T-Mobile has disabled internet access for Java programs in the firmware. (On the phone Java was running so I believed them, but because those Java games do not need internet access I found the truth 2 weeks later and at that time the phone was mine, T-mobile did sent me away)

Con’s of changing to RM-322:
You will not be able to use UMA from your provider so WiFi is not working anymore because
you will get error J0011.7 - Failed to connect. Retry. (Register Reject message from the UNC with an error cause UNC-SGW certificate not valid.)
I choose to accept this since WiFi is eating power a lot anyway but I will miss this feature abroad. For example when you are in Europe you can call your family in the USA without paying international rates by using UMA via WiFi and internet.

Pro’s of using the RM-322 image:
- You will be able to use Java applications with internet access using GPRS on your phone.
- Nice software like Google maps, Opera mini, and Skype will become available.
Google maps will show you roads and traffic jams on your phone
Skype allows your cell phone to call abroad cheaper.
When calling landlines and cell phones abroad with Skype: You pay Skype fees plus cell phone long distance fees. Calling Skype PC users anywhere in the world you pay the same fee as calling to Tampa from your cell phone.
There are many java applications you might like to run: see. http://midlet.org/
(Midlet is the middleware needed to run Java applications)

Nice to know:
• Nokia is making the software for T-Mobile and has an agreement that T-mobile phone can not be changed officially by Nokia
• You will not get help from Nokia or from T-Mobile. T-mobile customer support is fooling you around playing dumb.
• It is always better to buy an unbranded phone, T-Mobile (can only) and does take functionality away from small phones to increase profits. More expensive phones only come with unlimited internet access for lots of money; these phones do have Java internet access available since you pay at least $70 a month.
• It is my guess that because of Skype, T-mobile is crippling the phone and is disallow Java internet access for small phone which can carry the $9.99 internet plan.
• Your phone has 3 software indicators which makes it hard to change products or downgrade software versions. The 3 software identifiers are
1. Product code (RM-323)
2. Product code variant: 0557512
3. Software version (v 08.22)
• 3 files are needed to flash the phone. They have the same or higher version that what was used last on the phone. The phone will keep the version number last used.
• Since RM-322 has version 9.40 (which is the highest version) you can only go to RM-322 but never return to RM-323. RM-322 - 0551774 - SW 9.40 is the general Nokia version for the 6301.
• When you unplug your phone during software updates with Nokia Software Update program, the phone becomes dead, but can still be flashed with Phoenix 2008.
• When you abort flashing the phone with Phoenix 2008, the phone really is dead, indication: the blue light will stay on in flash mode and flashing is not possible anymore as far as I know. Therefore use a Laptop with battery backup or a PC with UPS power backup and plug in the phone with battery and a power cord.
• On a dead phone, when you start the phone with the USB plugged in, it will go into flash mode automatically.
• Once a phone is dead, the reset keys do not work anymore (simultaneous: green, *, 3, power)
• When your phone is running: *#0000# will show you the currently loaded image version and the language version

These are the steps. Please note you used them at your own risk. I am not working for Nokia so this information can contain errors. However these steps worked for me and may not work for you.

Dead phone, (and blue lights do not stay on), no problem, it works with Phoenix 2008

Important thing is that the version numbers need to be equal or higher.
If you install RM-322 version 9.4 you can not change anymore to any other product of version 5.93 or 8.22 since Version 9.4 is the highest number

After this install the WiFi connection does not work anymore due to UNC-SGW certificate error: J0011.7 Failed to connect. Handset receives Register Reject message from UNC with an error cause UNC-SGW certificate not valid.

Install Phoenix. This software did not install correct for me on Windows XP, So I had to run every installation file separately (Just run the BAT and MSI and EXE files)

You can choose to install RM-322 complete on your phone which will put you on version 9.4 and you never can go back to RM-323. If you choose to install mixed versions and use only the image file of RM-322 than you will be able to use the dead phone method to go back to the full RM-323 T-Mobile V8.22 version. In the mixed version method your phone will register at version v8.22

Follow these steps, but use common sense:

1) Make a backup on your phone by using settings->backup-restore
2) Turn phone off, take out power and battery,
3) Take out the SIM and the Memory card which contains the backup.
4) Then plug in power and battery and start the phone.
(This to make sure that you start in the right configuration)

- When you want to load RM-322 - SW 9.40 complete (not mixing versions), then follow these steps but do not change the image file. (Off course you need to select product RM-323 in step 10)

Steps to load RM-323 mixed with RM-322 image file:

5. When the phone is on, insert the USB plug. (If you have a “dead phone” leave the phone off and insert USB plug)

6). Run program: Phoenix 2008.44.5.3 6625
7). Create User if it asks to.
8). Go to menu Tools-> Image file download. Download both product codes:
0557512 = RM-323 SW 8.22
0551774 = RM-322 SW 9.40
This will be saved at: “C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products” if Phoenix settings are left at default

9) Select File-> manage connections. Select USB and make sure it is at the top of the list (or select no-connection for a dead phone, you will be able to push thru USB later on)

10). Select File-Scan product (for dead phone use “Select Product” RM-323 for mixed version or RM-322 for complete RM-322 version (You need to have it downloaded in step 8 and you need to do this selection step twice to see it reflected in the bottom line) In the menu option “Flashing” now will contain “Firmware update”

11). Go To menu: ->Flashing menu -> Select: Firmware update
12). In Firmware update Click on […] and select 0557512 (for mixed version) and 0551774 for full RM-322 version and click OK
13). (for mixed version) Go to “Options” and change the box “Content”: Select here the image file from RM-322
Image:
c:\program files\nokia\phoenix\products\RM-323\rm323__08.22.mcusw
PPM:
c:\program files\nokia\phoenix\products\RM-323\rm323__08.22.ppm_ntm
Content:
C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-322\rm322__09.40.image_a

14). For Dead phone: Click the checkbox: Dead Phone USB flashing,
15). Start flashing: Click the refurbish button.

16). In Dead phone mode: It now will ask you to power on the phone
17). Let it run until the phone is back up. (some steps have long waits, just let it run, if after 10 minutes there is no action, only then something is wrong)
18). Unplug and put the SIM and Memory back in, Then Restore your settings

You will see long waits at:
- Message: Waiting for update server to boot
- At full Restore, there is a long wait at 88% (depends on the size of the restore)

Note:
If you try to load a lower version then was last used on the phone: this will happen
The software will install but Reboot does happen after “Verifying Communication device”

Please continue this treat to improve the quality of this information.
I hope it is useful for you.

you can change it back to rm-323 by using the cracked version of JAF. it took me a long time to figure it out how to use it though XD.
Use JAF at your own risk. and if your phone is still within 1 year when you get it and signed the contract. they also carry warrinty so 10$ of shipping fee can get a fixed one back XD.

Has anyone else been able to do this? I've asked my local unlocker (who's also in the marketplace forum) and he's not that keen on taking this on (but on a Fido 6301). Any other success stories out there?

Let me try another way: are there any unlockers and service providers that can unbrand this phone for me (it's alerady unlocked)? Local to Montreal would be great, but I'm ready to ship the phone out to do it if necessary.
