(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: qfk123

Just let users of orange UK know i got my phone back from CRC nottingham UK, ringing panny and telling my problems on a19 after i sent it off on wenesday afternoon, got it back friday morning) top service.

CRC put a39 software 969AGAD87A39-39 DATED FEB 24 on it, they also set up my wap , MMS and a email profile which was nice of them, And both my MMS and email are working along with Infusio downloads, and 200 sms space.

Shame i have still got the annoying camera sound (but will see if i can live with it)

If i change the firmware to the a39 no sound will i lose the ability to download games, most prob leave the phone how it is for time being.

Regards

Glad to see you got good service from CRC.

When mine went in there was no end of delay, reason given - the machine that does updates not working. This was obviously not true as you and someone else I know got theirs upgraded at the same time.

I think they lost it. Can't complain too much though they replaced the handset with unbranded sim free version. My software version is exactly the same as yours (date, version).

What games have you ended up with? You say In-Fusio still works, thats interesting because other users that have been upgraded have found it no longer works. Doesn't on mine.

Does holding down 9 still take you to the In-Fusio menu?

Posted by: qfk123

yup,

hold 9 to get game menu, have the oh so popular wallbreaker, just downloaded space war , not a bad game

just the firmware i have is orange tailored as it works,

Posted by: Bazzer

The soft on my phone also seems tailored to Orange (mySP) as I get the Orange splash screens on startup/shutdown.

9 doesn't give In-fusio, just short cuts to entry 9 in the phonebook.

I've got Tetris and Sheep Herding.

When I got the handset all settings for MMS, e-mail (except password/ID) and WAP were correct.

So it looks like this version is Orange tailored as you say.

who are crc are they only for orange users? and did they do the upgrade for free, if phone is still under warranty (under twelve months old) I'm asking these questions as I need to upgrade mine from an archaic A-16 and am a bit dubious about diy

Posted by: qfk123

customer repair centre.

Phone comes with 1year panasonic warranty, so usually, ringing up panasonic explaining problems etc, results in a pre paid special delivery sent over, which you put your phone in with battery and changer, along with proof of purshase (receipt)

Ensure you do contact PANA first as this will ensure a 2 day turn round. Otherwise its 7-10 days!

bazzer thanx for the info trying to get crc phone number the one i got is +448705 159159 tried earlier but they close 5.30pm can you let me know if number is correct?

Posted by: Bazzer

Number I have is :

01159218000

From their invoice.

Posted by: maxcorrigan

I phoned crc uk ltd on the previous number i had , and they gave me the number you have, the guy i talked to said to upgrade mine from A16 to A-22 was free, to upgrade further ie. A-39 would cost £10.47 presumably if you are already on A-22 further upgrade would be free, he said to just take out sym and battery and send in padded envelope, did'nt need charger, it's a pity i can't get something to go wrong internally, and get the whole thing done on the warrenty (just a thought)

Just phone Panasonic and tell them it hangs after using WAP

Posted by: mavericke

you mean GPRS freezes?

Posted by: Bazzer

GPRS freezing was my problem. Pana will just take your word.

Posted by: ma123

Sent mine back via Orange, GPRS WAP freezing on disconnecting. Collected after 7 days A19-A39 upgrade. Well impressed.

Posted by: mavericke

good one for you then!

Posted by: Panasonic GD87e

Can I ask, to "ma123" that do you have Orange Care (insurance) or any other insurance? I don't want to "con" but I agree, GPRS WAP does hang (sometimes, but it does hang) as does MMS.

Also, did you get a new phone, or was it just the software upgrade?

PLEASE REPLY SOON!!!

Posted by: ma123

Nope I haven't got Orange care otherwise Orange would have replaced it. Took it back to place of purchase (Orange Retail) and explained problems with GPRS hanging. Asked to supply proof of purchase and left phone with them, the shop phoned me when it was ready to collect (took about 7 days) and firmware upgraded to A39 from A19. Same phone, games work etc. well pleased with the service and didn't cost a penny.

Posted by: Bazzer

Orange did not want to know when I rang them about problems with freezing using GPRS.

They said it was a manufacturer problem i.e. Pana.

If you want upgrade and in a short time ring Pana first, explain problem, they will then send you a prepaid special delivery envelope (ususally next day). Contacting Pana first ensures 2 day turnround at CRC.

Thanks for the replies, I think best think to do is go to the Orange Shop, which, luckily, is where I bought it from!
Will let you know news!

Posted by: Panasonic GD87e

Ooops, important question here-did you unlock the phone before giving it to Orange retail to upgrade to A39?

Thankyou

Posted by: ma123

Phone was as purchased, ie locked to Orange. The report I got back with the phone was from CRC so I presume they just did as Bazzer suggested, I know it takes a bit longer the way I did it but in case of any comebacks I did mine through Orange.

I originally contacted Orange CS but they were hopeless (told me no software upgrade had been approved) but Orange retail were excellent.

Posted by: Bazzer

There is an Ornge approved version of A39, this is the one that CRC will put on your phone.

There should be no problem with Orange Care if a fault develops later.

Posted by: Panasonic GD87e

If I unlock it first, do you think they'll find out, and if they do, do you think they'll do anything?

Posted by: Bazzer

Seem to recall someone else sending an unlocked handset, they didn't have any problems. They did send to CRC direct (after contacting Pana).

CRC wouldn't have any reason to be bothered about this their contract is with Pana not Orange.

Not sure that Orange would be too bothered either as they are after the contract.

I went to the Orange shop, and basically… I didn’t send it off. Now, I think I’ll send it myself, with Panasonic.

Some advice, please, what if it got lost, stolen, damaged or anything like that, scratched etc. I don’t have any insurance of any king, including Orange Care.

However, before I update (or try to, by sending to Panasonic saying that the GPRS hangs-which it does [the Orange shop bunch kept on saying that it’s normal, and with me being 16, they weren’t very fair as they would’ve been to someone in their 30s with a suit on]) I think I should unlock it. I have found the software, and it seems safe enough, but I need a cable. Now, if I do the naughty thing and buy one with no wait for £30 and return it, in-a-bit, I’ll have no cable in the end. However, I can also get a cable for £12.50 with a 3-day wait. No, if I get this, I’ll keep it long term, but then I need software to use the cable also to exchange data just as ringtones and photographs-any ideas of where I can get this software from?

PS, already tried mobileaction, Panasonic official site, as well as carphone warehouse Kondor cable (which is mobileaction)

Why don't you get it back to CRC for firmware upgrade, contact Orange about unlocking and get an IR port for your PC. Allows you to transfer pics., ringtones etc. with no additional software and will also work with any future phones with IR port.

Posted by: mavericke

If I'm not mistaken, if your phone is sim locked to Orange, even though you want to upgrade your phone by bringing it to ORange, they will still lock the phone for you although your phone is being upgraded.

Can you definitely transfer stuff with NO SOFTWARE, with an IrDA cable? I'll scream if you can, because I saw one ages ago, wioth £10 off-from £29.99 to £19.99!!!

I can't use it to unlock my phone though can I?

Posted by: ma123

Panasonic GD87e - Yep no software required. I have an IRDA adapter that i use with my GD87 and my SE P800 both with out any additional software - the GD87 allows transfer of pics. to and from pc, wallpapers and ringtones. Just drag and drop. Only problem I have found is I have to slow the transmission speed of the IRDA port down to 19200 to copy photos from phone to pc.

As far as I know you can't unlock it via IRDA - not bothered about mine being locked until contracts up so never done any homework on this one. I'm sure one of the other peeps will have the definitive answer.

The envelope you get from Pana is Special delivery which covers you for loss/damage and ensures next day delivery before 12 noon. CRC return under the same system.

Not sure about the scratched issue though.

Don't recall anybody who has had their phone upgraded metioning any problem with cosmetic damage from CRC
