Hello:

I currently have a Treo which is nearing the end of its life. I use my Treo for email, web and some PIM apps (Calender, Memos). I spend about 50% of the time using my Treo to check AOL and Gmail email accounts. I use it about the other 50% of the time surfing the web while sitting on the train going to work. For the above needs listed above.....can anyone recommend which device will fit me better? How is surfing the web on both of these devices? I am pretty sure that BB wins the fight w email. Thanks for any suggestions.

I hate to have to say this, but they both fit you.

The BlackBerry email is unbeatable. If you get an email, it is going to popup on your phone immediately letting you know you have an email. With the iPhone, you can set it to check every 5, 10 or 15 minutes, but it is not immediate like the BlackBerry.

The web is the iPhone is unbeatable. I love my BlackBerry, but the web capacity is no where near the iPhone Safari browser. The BlackBerry browser is not bad and renders the site, but it is just not as good as the iPhone. If you get a BlackBerry make sure you get one with OS 4.6 or above (like the Curve 8900 or Bold). BlackBerry's with 4.5 or below have horrible web browsers. I would YouTube some videos of the browser and see what it looks like for yourself.

Unfortunately I had a feeling that I would get this type of response....that the BB is much better for email and the iphone much better for internet. Thanks

Don't give up on an iPhone just yet. Especially if you can hold out for a couple of months to check out what the new OS offers. Apple's made great strides in their OS, and so has RIM of late, regardless of the hardware.

For Gmail and Contacts/Google Calendar - I use both a free and a Premier Account (for my domain) - the iPhone's just about as competent as a BB with BIS with Google's recent transition to Exchange for Contacts and Calendar management. I rely on getting notifications for new work email, and both of my devices get notifications within a minute or so of each other. Since the upgrade to Exchange with Google Calendar, the iPhone actually performs better than my BB using Google's Sync app - the iPhone and my Calendar are pushed to one another within 10 seconds most of the time. I was looking to move to a hosted Exchange set up when Google updated, and the iPhone and BB OS are just about identical.

I actually like the iPhone's mail capabilities better now for Gmail, as I have two options now - the built-in Mail app and a Gmail web app that gets better by the week. The web app - I have two on my Home Screen - allows for 100 percent of what I need on the road, and about 4/5 of the capabilities as the full-blown browser version - labels, archiving, deleting spam, adding calendar events, full email search. The web app only works for the iPhone and Android devices.

I know that I have a Storm, and it's not considered a "real" BB. I agree with that assessment, and I'll consider trading it in for the Curve replacement on VZW when it comes out. I traded in my Palm 755P for the Storm. Both RIM and the iPhone blow the Palm OS away for email on Gmail. If you can deal with the Palm a few more weeks, you'll be able to check out the 8900 variant on ATT/VZW and the new iPhone OS, they're all seemingly in the pipeline. Google's not too far away from offering real push for email, too. For browsing, there is no question to payroll's assessment, and I tend to use Opera Mini for my Storm when I have to use the Storm to browse. The only real advantage my Storm has over the iPhone is Vlingo, which I use to dictate short emails and text messages and for voice dialing - can't beat that solution.

If you still can wait for a couple of months, Apple will going to release next gen iphone and I'm sure this will be a next good device as they always did.
