E815... UPGRADE TIME: BB/Smart Phone choices?

Hey all... so I've got an old brick E815 that I'm DYING to upgrade. Long story short, someone in my fam upgraded all the dang phones to these POS slim/small things, thus voiding my own upgrade option! So I've been waiting for a year to get something modern and functional with wifi/email/business type setting.
I've been out of the phone-scene for a very long time and have no clue where to start regarding one of these types of BB/clone, type phones.

I was thinking about the storm, but it's clearly a flawed beta-toy imo, as many of my friends ran out and got one and now are very dissatisfied. A coworker has the Bold, but obs it's not on VZN and frankly I don't like the small screen and clunky design of the BB line.

I've been dreaming of something like the HTC Diamond Pro but the price is daunting and again... no VZN!

I pay around 110/mo alone for my E815, Fam share 1400min + Unlimited txt, with ~4-5 phones on the plan. Last month the bill was a whopping $210!!!! Reading the bill, made little sense for why my end of the line was so costly Vs everyone elses. So while I do want a nice phone, I don't want to get conned into an even more pricey lease/month...

Can someone point me in the right direction for a smarter "phone?" With all these hidden charges and unexplained bill jargon, I fear even if I did get one of these devices, the cost per month wouldn't come close to justifying having it?
