does the E71x require data to make wifi work?

Here's what I'm really looking to do (and I'm totally new to the idea of a cellphone doing ANYTHING besides make and receive calls/texts)

I'm looking to use a cellphone i have yet to buy as a calendar. Looks like most of the big calendar programs can all talk to each other from PC to PC, so at least ONE of them has to be able to talk to a phone!

I was looking at google calendar which stated it can operate on a cellphone, just type m.calendar.google.com or something like that in the phone's browser.

Thing is, I don't do the "data" thing. I was hoping to get it working via bluetooth, but the E71x as a candidate phone is wifi capable. When I am at home, I could link it to my wireless router. Does this mean at this point, the phone would be as operational on the internet as any of your guy's phones with the data packages? I can download apps, surf the web, do all that crazy crap I'd never actually do? Including sync google's calendar via URL?

in short, the question is: E71x, no data. Will wifi: turn the phone into full featured data using modern internet crazy device, or just let me sync a calendar? or neither? or both?

Thanks,

I don't have the E71x, but it should work fine without data. If there's a way, you'll want to disable MEdia Net on the phone to make sure you don't accidently use it.

I don't have the E71x , but I have the E71-2 (which is just the unbranded version of your phone). So unless AT&T did some serious work on that phone and limits what you can do, you should be fine.

I dont currently have a data plan for my phone. Mainly, because I can access wifi at home and work, so no need for it. I can sync calendars, browse the internet, download stuff, pretty much anything any other mobile device can do. Or to quote you, it will make your phone a "full featured data using modern internet crazy device" .

So, I think for what you're looking for and to do, the E71x is a great choice.

WiFi works regardless if you have a data plan or not.

Please note that that some of AT&T's apps only runs on their data - not wifi - so watch out what your connecting too.

Thanks,

You don't even need to use the webbrowser, just use Google Sync over MFE.

Real quick, is Pandora available on mobile wifi? or available on Symbian (or whatever it takes to run on the nokia E71x without paying for a data plan)

is it possible to run pandora on my phone in wifi hotspots?

Didnt work with the E71x

oh well. gmail works, just not the calendar. Maybe soon.

The real crime is Pandora doesn't work either. email to me is a gimmick, a fun toy. Pandora would be phenomenal.

maybe it does work. I get stuck at the "domain". What's an example domain? I'm kinda clueless for this. I'm just looking to get my google calendar

not at first, now it's set up. the contacts appear to sync but not the calendar. 0 entries every time, though the sync is successful.

I'm going to start a new thread, the title of this one doesn't reflect the current goals anymore. Thank you so far zeph, the doc was helpful, I hadn't seen it before.
