Selling VZW phones and insurance

It has been more than 2 years since I got a new phone, so I have no obligations attached to my Samsung Alias. I was planning on selling it soon, but recently the front screen became damaged. I have insurance on the phone. Can I make an insurance claim, pay the $50 deductible, get the new phone, and then immediately sell it? I think I should be able to, but I don't want the buyer to get screwed somehow.

Yes, you should be able to do it.

I think you have to activate it on your account first, but once you activate it you can sell it.

A friend of mine lost her phone and filed a claim for a new one. In the mean time she had an old phone activated to hold her over. When the new phone came in she needed fast cash, so she sold it to me with out ever activating it. I had no problem activating it myself and have been using it for over a year.

Now I can't say for sure the same would work for you, but it did for me.

It might not have gotten flagged in the system when you activated it, but it's possible that if you had to change it and then you or someone else had to activate it again it might be flagged now. Plus it's also possible that there might be on your friend's account now because of this (again, it might not have come up back then and maybe not so far, but when phones would need to be changed again down the line or something else comes up on the account or perhaps insurance might need to get involved again for something this might come up). The best thing to do is activate it on the account first (the one for which the phone was sent as a replacement) and then right away switch to another phone if desired and do whatever with that replacement phone at that point.
