Internation Phone Help

My brother-in-law just left for Iraq a few weeks ago and he is wondering now how he can get a phone. My wife is going to buy it and ship it to him. I was wondering where I can get an international phone/SIM card or something? I don't know much about the international stuff. Thank you.

The cheapest way to call is VOIP. This requires an internet connection. I have taken Vonage adapters to Taiwan and Korea and I've used them to call the US and elsewhere just as if I were in the US.

A cellular solution would be to get a used, unlocked GSM phone (EBAY) with BOTH 900 and 1800 MHz frequencies. Your brother-in-law can then get a local SIM card. This will give him a local phone number. I know nothing about the pricing for cellular service in Iraq. Many European and Asian cellular providers charge the caller for incoming calls and this can be EXPEN$IVE. My daughter is in Germany and it costs $0.24/minute to call her (more on Vonage). This is a premium that you pay to the foreign cellular service provider over and above the long distance charge.

Thank you, Bugwart. So he would buy the SIM card over there? So it just needs to be an unlocked GSM, not one that says world phone like the BB Storm?

An unlocked GSM phone with 900 and 1800 MHz and a local SIM card will be much cheaper than usiing a US phone number with roaming charges.
