Trying to buy a new phone and couldn't choose between a Noka E71X or an Iphone 3G S. Or a Blackberry phone perhaps?

Thanks.

That would partially depend on two things. What are you planning mostly on using your phone for, work or fun? Then what features would you probably be most interested in and/or use the most?

You're going to get people from all three camps saying each one is the best phone. It usually boils down to this:

iPhone: Excellent media phone. Great if you're planning on surfing the web and using Facebook/Twitter/MySpace/etc. Really good for portable viewing of videos and listening to music. Has a decent e-mail app, but Blackberry users complain that Push is limited, even though it does Push Exchange, Yahoo and MobileMe (but not Gmail as of yet).

By far, the iPhone is currently the undisputed king of apps, so if you want your phone to do a certain task, it's likely the iPhone has an app for it.

You'll either love or hate (but eventually get used to) the virtual keyboard. And AT&T needs tog et their act together and support MMS for this phone already.

This phone hasn't gotten much business cred, but I am seeing more and more IT guys and upper management types using them.

Blackberry: Excellent e-mail phone. Does e-mail and does it well, especially push e-mail. If this is what you're primarily using your phone for, then you'll want to consider this device. Blackberry is pretty much the undisputed king of Business phones. Tons of business people have Blackberries.

Other functions (web browsing, media, etc) I've been kinda underwhelmed with, but they've improved steadily. They'll do the job if called upon.

Nokia E71: I haven't have any experience with this device. At first glance, it looks to be Nokia's attempt at copying a Blackberry, having most of the same features. I guess if you're a fan of Nokia, this would be the phone for you.

Then there's the Fuze too. For some reason, lots of people on this site seem to dislike Windows Mobile, but it is a great phone that fits between the iPhone and Blackberry.

It can be a great business phone with Exchange (or Seven or Windows Live push mail).

It has a slideout keyboard, which IMO will always be better than an on-screen keyboard.

It is also a great go-between for multimedia. Slingplayer works great, there are great apps for music (S2P, Pocket Player, etc).

There is endless tweaking you can do to it and faster firmware (ROMs) you can flash to it.

The one downside is battery life. By the end of the day I'm usually down to 50% and I'm not a heavy user by any means, but I do have push mail.

The best answer is to figure out what you want to do with the phone, then go to a store and play with each of them for a while and see which one you like better.

The E61 was Nokia copying the Blackberry form factor and improving on it significantly (no creaky plastic here!). The E71 is Nokia blowing the Blackberry hardware out of the water.

Presumably the E71x is as good as the E71 hardware wise. Software wise, I don't know if it includes Nokia's incredibly neat podcasting and internet radio apps.

The E71 is the most solid feeling phone I've ever had the pleasure of using. My E75 is better in several ways, but it does not have the feeling of indestructability the E71 has. It's merely solid. Like the E61 and E62.

All that said, if email is your primary use and you work for a company with a BES, the Blackberry solution can't be beat. And the Bold is a pretty darn nice phone.

If you want a physical keyboard and your company doesn't have a BES, go with the E71x. If you mainly want to watch videos and play music, go with the iPhone. If you mainly want to email and your company has a BES, go with a Blackberry.

And if you want to have a phone that has a mature Garmin GPS solution, can be turned into a WiFi hotspot to tether computers, SSH into remote computers, play last.fm radio stations, use what is by far the best Twitter app on any platform, and use Nokia Sports Tracker, what I consider one of the neatest web services in the last few years, go with the E71x.

Oh, and it's got a near-iPhone quality browser that has Flash support. (I guess the 3G S has finally caught up in that department) That browser was far and away the best available on any phone until the iPhone, BTW.
