my dad just got a new GMC Sierra and it came with a built in phone and i was just wondering what kind of phone is it? im assuming cellular
if it is would it be gsm or cdma?
who would the provider be?

I don't believe it comes with a cell phone, but rather a cell phone link. This allows him to connect his cell phone to his vehicle's internal stereo system so when he makes a call or receives a call, the audio is played through the car speakers.

im wondering how it works technically
how does onstar provide phone?
im assuming cellular and i find it hard to believe they would have there own towers
so does anyone know who provides them

Its CDMA and Verizon Wireless.

You can subscribe with OnStar, and amongst all the features, you can have OnStar basically do "operated assisted" calls for you.

Or you can directly subscribe with Verizon for service. Most people who do that, claim their vehicle is like one of their family, and add it to a "family plan" as an additional line. See Nationwide Calling Plan with OnStar.

I missed the mention that this is for Canada.

Its still CDMA, but with Bell Mobile.
